The mother of a little boy who was upset about his new glasses asked some friends to help reassure him about his new look. Lindsey Fisher began a Facebook account called Glasses for Noah, where bespectacled friends could send in pictures of themselves to reassure her son, Noah, about becoming a glasses-wearer. Fisher reached out to friends and family, but the page took on a life of its own and strangers from around the country have sent in pictures for four-year-old Noah. Noah Fisher, four, looks very dapper in his black-rimmed spectacles, but he was very worried about what kind of reception he would get.4岁的诺亚·费希尔戴着黑框眼镜,看上去十分帅气,但是他对别人会怎么评价自己很担忧。#39;I said, ;Put your glasses on,; and he just broke into tears,#39; Lindsey Fisher told USA Today. #39;It was the saddest thing. It just broke my heart. And I finally got him to tell me why he was crying and he said because everyone was going to laugh at him.#39;“这件事情很让人难过,我心都碎了。 Fisher enlisted friends to post on Glasses for Noah and soon it had received hundreds of likes and pictures to help reassure little Noah. #39;Our sweet 4-year old, Noah, just got glasses and is having a hard time adjusting. Let#39;s show him just how cool glasses really are!#39; s the Facebook page. 让我们向他展示戴眼镜究竟可以有多酷!”Now, the page has 923 #39;likes#39; and Fisher says that as long as people keep posting pictures, she#39;ll keep it going. #39;It was very humbling to see how the community took time out of their day to post a picture of themselves for a little boy that half of them don#39;t even know,#39; she told USA Today. The uploaded pictures have messages of support for Noah to show him that there is nothing uncool about wearing glasses. #39;I don#39;t know how many more likes or pictures we#39;ll get but as long as I#39;m getting pictures, I#39;ll keep showing them to him every night,#39; Fisher said. /201312/267171Holland’s Queen Maxima proved to be a distraction for David Cameron, Barack Obama and Francois Hollande at the Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague. The 40-year-old appeared to court more attention than her husband King Willem-Alexander last night at the Royal Palace Huis ten Bosch. The monarchs greeted their international guests before the official dinner. As Britain#39;s Prime Minster David Cameron shook the King#39;s hand he was making eye contact with the blonde-haired queen. Similarly French President Francois Hollande directed his gaze at the mother-of-three as he greeted her husband. US President Obama appeared to share a light moment with the Queen as she smiled while he laughed - again her husband looked on. Later at dinner she continued to capture an audience - she was seen animatedly pointing to paintings on the ceiling of the palace while King Willem Alexander of the Netherlands spoke. Queen Maxima seems to be adjusting well to her new role - she became Queen of the Netherlands when her mother-in-law Beatrix abdicated the throne to her son in April, didn#39;t let her basic form of transport get in the way of style. The royal couple have three daughters, Amalia, nine, Alexia, seven, and Ariane, five.

In America, it’s the choice of blue-collar workers and hipsters — an unpretentious lager known primarily for its cheap price tag. But in China, some versions of Pabst Blue Ribbon are something else entirely: high-end alcoholic beverages that would be right at home in a socialite’s manicured hands. Pabst Blue Ribbon 1844 was introduced a few years ago in China with a price tag of a bottle. The ad copy that went along with it : “It’s not just Scotch that’s put into wooden casks. There’s also Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer 1844. Many world-famous spirits are matured in precious wooden casks — Scotch whisky, French brandy, Bordeaux wine…” and goes on to call the beer “truly a treasure among beers.” /201407/312625

It has been said a man needs no more ornaments than a watch and wedding ring. Perhaps that#39;s because the idea of men wearing jewelry can evoke images of gold chains framed by a barely buttoned shirt. But there are many degrees of decoration between a strict limit of watch and wedding ring -- with the occasional cuff links, of course -- and the stuff of #39;Saturday Night Fever.#39;有人说,除了手表和婚戒,男人什么装饰品都不需要。 A few old-school accent pieces have started to make their way back into the gentleman#39;s wardrobe -- the signet ring, the tie clip and the lapel pin -- thanks, in part, to the influence that the #39;50s have been wielding on menswear runways. But how to wear all this hardware? #39;There are a million ways to get it wrong and only a few to get it right,#39; said Tyler Thoreson, vice president of men#39;s editorial and creative at Gilt Groupe. #39;That#39;s part of the fun -- it#39;s a little tricky, and more rewarding to pull off in a sophisticated way.#39;但是这些东西该如何佩戴? As a general rule, it#39;s wise to err on the side of understatement. Employing a tie clip? Skip the lapel pin. Considering multiple rings? Leave that look to the likes of Johnny Depp. With bracelets, too, less can be more. Let the Zoolanders flaunt coils of rope and leather that creep up their forearms. For laymen, one does the trick. Robert Bryan, author of the book #39;American Fashion Menswear,#39; is a proponent of the classic chain link ID bracelet. With men#39;s jewelry, generally, #39;silver is the safer choice,#39; said Mr. Bryan, who also advised caution when it comes to decorative stones. #39;They should be small and discreet, lest you be known as the Diamond Jim Brady of the office.#39;手镯也是一样,宁少勿多。 (Diamond Jim Brady)。”It also helps to wear pieces that have a significance beyond sheer aesthetics -- jewelry that has a history or was received as a gift. #39;I think for men, the key is that it have meaning,#39; said Lisa Salzer, who designs women#39;s jewelry for her own label, Lulu Frost, and recently spun off a men#39;s line called George Frost. Tom Kalenderian, executive vice president of menswear at Barneys New York, noted that bracelets are often bought as gifts since, unlike rings, they usually don#39;t need to be sized. Casual wrist-wear -- beads and bracelets made of worn leather and nautical-style rope, like those popularized by American brand Miansai -- suggests a life of adventure, imagined or not. However, more sophisticated pieces can carry a compelling back story, too. Jewelry designer Monique Pean, who recently launched a men#39;s line, uses materials with notable past lives. Ms. Pean#39;s tie clip is made of 18-karat recycled white gold, and ivory from a wooly mammoth sourced from the Arctic Circle, as well as onyx. #39;Men gravitate toward fossils,#39; she noted. Her distinctive clip brings a layer of intrigue to what can otherwise be a pragmatic accent. (The tie clip -- also known as tie bar or tie clasp -- does serve a function, unlike other pieces of jewelry: It keeps your tie straight, out of your face on a windy day and off of your plate.) The clip should be narrower than the tie on which it#39;s worn, said Mr. Thoreson. The correct placement is between the third and fourth shirt buttons. It should also be perfectly horizontal, though Mr. Bryan suggested that daring men might try the downward-tilted #39;rakish angle#39; that flourished in the 1930s. Hogan Gidley, a Republican consultant based in Columbia, S.C., and Washington, D.C., wears a sterling-silver tie clip from Tiffany#39;s that#39;s engraved with his initials. #39;I might be an outlier in the party for wearing a tie clip, but I have seen more Republican pundits on TV starting to dabble in [them],#39; he said. Known in political circles for being a dapper dresser, Mr. Gidley also sports a signet ring; it#39;s engraved with a family crest that, he said, dates back hundreds of years. Signet rings are more prevalent in the South, he noted, and can also bear the crest or seal of the wearer#39;s alma mater. The signet ring is an age-old emblem of aristocratic belonging, yet designer brands are reworking the look, if not also the underlying message, into fashion accessories. See: Eddie Borgo (inlaid rubber), Bottega Veneta (a crosshatch motif that mimics the brand#39;s signature woven leather) and Ms. Pean (fossilized walrus ivory). One savvy tactic is to wear the ring up against a wedding band, thereby confining digital decoration to a single finger. Another badge that has become more of a style statement is the lapel pin. In the form of an American flag, it is de rigueur among politicians. But luxury labels have embraced pins as well. Several years ago, Italian brand Isaia created a mini-craze for the coral-shaped lapel pins that come with its jackets. And fashion houses that once tacked lapel pins onto suits as a bit of runway-only styling are now selling the accessories in stores. This spring, Louis Vuitton is offering pins shaped like pretzels and marijuana roach clips while Saint Laurent is selling one that looks like a surfer shooting the curl. Lapel pins can add a hint of personality in more buttoned-up work environments. #39;A lot of guys in my line of work don#39;t want to draw attention to themselves. They#39;d rather just wear the uniform,#39; said Chris Schumacher, a 37-year-old Manhattan financier. He wasn#39;t speaking for himself -- he#39;s partial to nautical rope bracelets, and wears an enamel fox-hunting pin on his overcoat. He added, #39;It#39;s nice to see people getting away from just the watch and ring.#39;在比较严肃的工作环境中,领针会给人增添一丝个性。 /201402/276254

Stop for a moment and ask yourself if there was ever a time (or times) you’ve arrogantly said or thought: “I’m too smart for this.” If you’re someone who always believed that you’re Mr. Smarty Pants, you may want to take a step back and contemplate. That kind of thinking can work against you in life and in work. So while it’s difficult to face the truth, let’s entertain the possibility that you may not be as smart as you think you are. Read on and check if you have the following signs:面对现实并不容易——为什么说你没有自认为的那样聪明? 1. You’re more of a talker than a listener你爱倾诉,不擅倾听And that’s putting it nicely. You like the sound of your own voice, with or without you knowing it. People don’t come to you to talk about their problems or even celebrate their successes because you always end up talking about your own problems and successes. If this sounds like you, consciously decide to listen and focus on the what the person is saying the next time you’re in a conversation with someone. Don’t try to upstage them, just listen. You show off only the good stuff and make some up你只炫耀好的一面,还会编造一些You hide your true personality. You fake it. Big time. While it’s good to always be at your best when meeting important people, you take it to a whole other level: You lie so that people have a better impression of you. Smart people value truth and know better than to hide for the sake of looking good. Showing only your good side and adding some special effects will tire you in the long run. 3. You’re always in the middle of a storm你总处在风暴中心You always find yourself in the middle of conflict. And when you think back on it, you either caused that conflict or you added fuel to the flames. Smart people, on the other hand, either don’t get involved when there’s nothing they can do or do their best to help end the conflict. Try to do the same. 4. You discourage people instead of lifting them up你不鼓励别人,反倒打击别人You discourage people, not just by saying so outright but also by not giving them the time of day. In a way, you’re telling them that their ideas or their problems are not worth your time or your (perceived) intelligence. Smart people help encourage others by actually paying attention. They listen (note the first sign) and share what they know. If big shots like Richard Branson and Adm. William McRaven, commander in the U.S. special forces, can take the time to answer letters from kids, you can spend a few minutes encouraging people. You prefer lowbrow entertainment你喜欢低俗You don’t challenge yourself with difficult subjects and are content to stick to entertaining yet hardly thought-provoking ing material. You also spend hours watching bad reality TV. Real smart people thrive on ing books and watching films that spark their creativity and make them think and question. A few hours of intellectual ing could open up your horizons so give it a shot. You can start by listening to audiobooks if the thought of ing thick books is daunting to you. 6. You’re always so busy你总是忙忙碌碌Your work life consists of you running around like a headless chicken. There always seems to be a problem that takes up most of your work day. You also find yourself doing all the work, all the time. Learn how to delegate and ask for help. It’s a little arrogant of you to think that you can do everything for everyone. Make it a point to rest and spend time on things that matter in life, not just work. You may have been praised a lot when you were a child, a teen, or a college student because of your high grades and other academic achievements. That’s great. Ego boosts now and then are healthy and needed. But strive for more than just accolades. If you truly want to be smart but find yourself guilty of the signs above, now’s the chance to make a change. Be a smarter, better version of you. /201311/265465

Looking like a tourist can cost you money and pride. Looking like a local can open you up to even greater harassment. Read our survivor#39;s guide, split the difference and come away with your upper lip intact. 1. Getting around出行Travel around the UK is relatively simple. Yes, they drive on the left, but don#39;t be daunted. Most roads are so narrow that it doesn#39;t make any difference which side you#39;re on. Be prepared when driving distances of more than 20 miles. Britain has an extensive and efficient rail network, which only ever grinds to a halt when the weather turns hot, cold, wet or dry. Tickets are expensive but you can find cheap fares by booking eight or nine years in advance of travel. 2. Climate气候There are warm days in the UK, but you know you#39;re in a damp country when the merest hint of sunshine is front page news. Britain has four seasons, and while the transitions between them can be pleasant, each is typically as wet, gray and cold as the last. All are considered by Brits to be ;ice cream weather.;英国人看来这四季都是“冰淇淋天气”。Whatever the climate throws at you, be prepared for endless conversations about it. These needn#39;t be dull since, like Eskimos with snow, Brits have a impressive lexicon for rain. If you hear the word ;mizzle,; it probably means a light shower. Or maybe a low quality Snoop Dogg track. 3. Royalty皇室Don#39;t be duped by Downton Abbey. Britain has come a long way since the days when ordinary folk were awestruck by aristocracy. This is a modern country where all are born equal and social rewards are based on merit. This is why few British people bothered turning up when a blue-blooded chap married his sweetheart in 2011. It#39;s why barely anyone noticed when she gave birth a couple of years later. And it#39;s also why no one batted an eyelid when his flame-haired brother got naked in Vegas. OK, none of that is true. British people are as in thrall to their royal family as you are. And they#39;re willing to sell you a Wills #39;n#39; Kate souvenir tea towel with matching oven mitts to prove it. 4. History历史Britain has so many ancient attractions, it#39;s hard to know where to start. And if you do manage to visit all the sites of historical interest, archeologists will simply dig up the bones of another 15th-century king from under a parking lot, just to annoy you. But since some Brits are only aware of two key dates -- a French invasion in 1066 and an England soccer World Cup victory 900 years later -- you don#39;t need to try too hard to catch up. Try visiting the northern city of York, where you can wallow in 2,000 years of British history in one location. Or Bath, where you can do the same and also wallow in a nice thermal bath. 5. Tea茶叶There may be coffee shops on every UK street corner, but Britain is resolutely a tea-drinking nation. Vast lakes of insipid infusions are consumed on a daily basis. Visitors will note the almost mandatory provision of a miniscule electric jug, or kettle, in every hotel room. It will take four hours to boil half a cup, but for many Brits this is an essential lifeline. There isn#39;t any crisis they believe can#39;t be solved with a nice cup of tea, and perhaps a biscuit. When preparing tea, there are rituals to be observed. Use boiling water and, if you must resort to tea bags, always add the milk last. Failure to do so will result in such distress that it may take another cup of tea to calm everyone down again. 6. Language语言If in doubt, mimic the body language. Even if you#39;re fluent in English, you may experience linguistic difficulties in the UK. Regional dialects vary extensively in the space of a few miles, resulting in bafflement even among locals. If you can#39;t understand what a British person is saying, it#39;s fairly safe to assume it#39;s either a). something about the weather (see climate above), or b). an apology. British people love apologizing: they#39;re sorry to trouble you, sorry they can#39;t be more helpful, sorry about the rain and sorry about invading your country in 1762, or whenever it was. They also love apologizing when it#39;s not even their fault: they#39;re sorry that you bumped into them, sorry you knocked them to the floor and sorry that you are repeatedly thwacking them over the head and telling them to stop apologizing. Be warned though, it#39;s contagious. 7. Cuisine菜肴Britain#39;s bland national diet has been revolutionized by South Asian migrants whose spicy concoctions are now firm favorites sold on every high street. Meanwhile, pubs that once nourished customers with despondent sandwiches are now studded with Michelin stars. But don#39;t be fooled. They might pretend to love fine dining, but when on the hoof, many Brits still prefer to fill their faces with offal and saturated fat. Few journeys are made within the ed Kingdom that aren#39;t catered with sausage rolls, Cornish pasties and Scotch eggs. Visitors troubled by the sight of greasy meat should also be warned of three words that will strike fear -- if not full-blown cardiovascular seizures -- into their hearts: Full. English. Breakfast. 8. Television电视Be sure to take time out from your travels to sample a few hours of British television, but seek not the polished period dramas that are easily exported to other countries. Where British TV excels is in its celebration of the lives of ordinary, dare we say boring, citizens. The UK#39;s three most popular soaps focus not on the beautiful or the damned, but on normal folk engaged in humdrum tasks like buying cheese, arguing about pottery or tending to their farms. /201312/268206
