What tools do you use at work that you didn’t a decade ago? That’s the question I posed to a group of friends recently, hoping for a host of interesting examples of how technology is transforming the workplace. But the responses from a disparate group that included insurance brokers, speech therapists and entrepreneurs surprised me. All the new digital products they rated were, in effect, secretary substitutes. I heard paeans to the utility of Skyscanner for corporate travel, the benefits of Google Docs for holiday rotas and the value of EchoSign for electronic signature of documents. Regardless of industry or seniority, document encryption services and tools designed to prevent endless email trails also cropped up with regularity. This is self-service in action and a vivid example of why administrative jobs frequently top the list as those most at risk from automation. Back in 2001, there were nearly 400,000 secretarial and personal assistant roles in the UK. Now there are fewer than 200,000. The disappearance of that person who used to be the linchpin of office life has been driven by a combination of cost-cutting in the wake of the financial crisis — there was a 12 per cent drop in such roles between 2009 and 2010 alone — and the internet revolution. Administrators’ salaries proved a tempting target for businesses desperate to trim budgets, with the bonus that cuts could be billed as modernisation and as embracing new ways of working. But has the efficiency drive gone too far? The days when companies needed someone to type letters and file correspondence physically are long gone, but the digital era has brought its own version of the administrative grind. The work has not gone away, it has just been dispersed across the workforce. While phasing out jobs that just “turn the handle” is all part of the move to a higher skilled workforce, there are consequences. A recent survey from Qualtrics found UK workers estimate that less than 65 per cent of the time they spend at work is productive. The hours wasted spent trying to get a computerised approval system to understand an edge case are staples of many a pub rant. Vickie Sokol Evans, who trains Bill Gates’ executive assistants, and those in other organisations, in Microsoft technology, says there is great pressure in all organisations to “do more with less”. But she argues that efficiency comes from using technology well, not just dropping it in front of the workforce and expecting them to get on with it. Is it really more efficient for 20 sales people to all do their own expenses and travel, or can one person who really understands both the software and the rules help remove some of the grit from the wheels of corporate life? That would also mean the sales team could be out there doing what they were hired to do: selling. Top executives, of course, have managed to hang on to their secretaries — nowadays more often than not termed executive assistants. But these roles are far broader than they used to be. Monitoring budgets, preparing reports, designing slidedecks and similar tasks are increasingly part of the required skillset. A recent survey by Hays for Executive Secretary — whose conference Ms Sokol Evans will address in London next week — reported that nearly 90 per cent of senior staff said they could not to do their jobs without their PA. Peggy Grande, who was executive assistant to US President Ronald Reagan for 10 years, says no amount of technology or progress towards virtual assistants can make up for the human factor. “It is about not just what needs to be accomplished now, but staying three steps ahead,” she adds. Ms Sokol Evans says she knows of at least one multinational that is reviewing its career options for PAs and is looking to create a twin track structure: one path for those who want to push for more responsibility and widen the definition of their role and another for those who get job satisfaction from ensuring systems actually work. The pace of the digital revolution shows no signs of slackening and few office jobs will be the same in a decade. But that means the need to help humans and systems gel is more pressing. Sometimes a calm, helping hand can deliver greater efficiency gains than a software upgrade. /201604/437358

The crossbow triggers and parts found in EmperorQin#39;s mausoleum. One of the most astounding archaeologicaldiscoveries of the 20th century is arguably the life-size terra-cotta armyburied alongside China#39;sfirst emperor. Now, scientists have figured out how the bronze triggers for thecrossbows of the 8,000 terra-cotta warriors were manufactured. Teams of craftspeople workedin small groups to produce the bronze pieces in batches for the tomb of ancientEmperor Qin Shi Huang, according to a new study detailed in the March issue ofthe journal Antiquity. Historical documents suggest that soon afterEmperor Qin Shi Huang ascended to the throne in 246 B.C., he began work on histomb near Xi#39;an, China. When the tomb was firstunearthed in the 1970s,it revealed thousands of lifelike terra-cotta statues ofartisans, musicians, officials, horses and soldiers. The epic effortconscripted 700,000 laborers, many of whom were convicts or people who were indebt to the empire, said study co-author Xiuzhen Janice Li, an archaeologistwho was at the University College London at the time of the new work and is nowat the Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s MausoleumSite Museumin China. The massive undertaking had an important goal:ensuring the emperor#39;s military power and resources in the afterlife. As part of the huge project, craftspeoplesculpted about 8,000 colorful warriors — likely using real human beings asinspiration — and those warriors wore stone armor and ;wielded;lances, swords and crossbows. But it wasn#39;t clear exactly how these ancientweapons were made. The crossbows were made of wood or bamboo that rotted longago, and only the tips and triggers for the bows remained, Li told LiveScience. To learn more about how the massive trove wasbuilt, Li and her colleagues visually inspected and measured about 216 of thefive-part crossbow triggers from the mausoleum. The lack of wear on the metal pieces suggeststhe weapons were never used in actual battle, but were instead built solely forthe tomb, the researchers said. In addition, the team analyzed the spots wheretriggers were found in the tomb, as well as the variation in the size and shapeof the pieces. The pieces were mostly uniform, suggesting theinterlocking trigger parts were made in the same or nearly-identical molds andproduced in small batches. Each batch of the trigger pieces was likely thenassembled in small cells, or workshops, perhaps headed by anoverseer. That model contrasts with the ;assembly line;hypothesis that some archaeologists thought might have been used. The organization into small workshops wassimilar to the structure the emperor imposed on the rest of society in ancient China, said study co-author Marcos Martinón-Torres, an archaeologist at the UniversityCollege London. ;He abolished any privileges inherited byblood, and the population was divided in small groups that were collectivelyresponsible for their adherence to imperial laws,; Martinón-Torres wrotein an email to Live Science. ;For example, if someone in one of thesegroups committed a crime, all of them were held responsible, unless they reportedthe culprit and allowed them to be punished.;“他废除了宗法制,在法律上对民众实行连坐制度” Martinón-Torres在他写给《生动科学》的电子邮件中说到:“举个例子,如果一组人中一个人犯了罪,其余所有人都要为此承担责任,除非他们举报责任人并让他接受惩罚。”The manufacturing technique used in the workshopalso may have been used by weapon makers for the Emperor of Qin#39;s real armies, though that#39;s just speculation, Martinón-Torres said. ;The cellular workshop model we postulatefor the weapons manufacture in the mausoleum would have also offered usefulflexibility for armies on the move,; he said. /201606/451980

AMD just officially unveiled its Ryzen desktop processor family, a chip that it says can compete with Intel#39;s chips at long last. AMD#39;s last generation of desktop chips was disappointing, and has been largely relegated to low-end computers. But Ryzen manages a 52 percent boost in instructions per cycle (IPC) over last time, which puts it on a level playing field with the best Intel has to offer.AMD官方刚刚发布了其新一代锐龙系列桌面处理器,其性能据称能与英特尔的芯片抗衡。 The Ryzen family will come in multiple flavors, but the high-end Ryzen 7 is shipping first. The chip has eight cores and 16 ths, and starts at 9. At the top end is the 3.6GHz (4.0GHz turbo), 9 Ryzen 7 1800X, which compares well with Intel#39;s ,050 i7-6900K. According to AMD#39;s benchmarks, the 1800X ties the 6900K on singlethed benchmarks, and beats Intel on multithed performance. AMD uses a few hundred more megahertz to get there, which means AMD isn#39;t doing quite as much as Intel Broadwell per hertz. But it#39;s the end result that matters, and AMD is claiming to match or beat Intel across the spectrum with better prices — the dream scenario, basically.AMD这次用了一个略高于Intel的频率,因此它的同频性能可能不如Intel的Broadwell,但是AMD仍旧可以利用定价区间的优势与之竞争甚至取胜——当然,这一切是建立在AMD按照预定的计划做的基础上。The new processors are available for preorder now, and will ship on March 2nd. AMD is promising to have plenty of inventory and a ton of motherboard options at launch. It#39;s a lot of promises, AMD! Hopefully Ryzen can deliver, and we can get a real fight in the desktop market, which will be wonderful for anybody not named ;Intel.;新的处理器现在已经开始预订了,将会在三月二号正式发售。 /201702/494019

Scientists from the University of Central Florida (UCF) have created a supercapacitor battery prototype that works like new even after being recharged 30,000 times. The research could yield high-capacity, ultra-fast-charging batteries that last over 20 times longer than a conventional lithium-ion cell. ;You could charge your mobile phone in a few seconds and you wouldn#39;t need to charge it again for over a week,; says UCF researcher Nitin Choudhary.UCF的研究员尼廷·乔杜里表示:“你只要为你的手机充几秒钟的电,那么在接下来的一个多星期之内就不需要再次充电了。”Supercapacitors can be charged quickly because they store electricity on the surface of a material, rather than using chemical reactions. That requires ;two-dimensional; material sheets that can hold lots of electrons. However, much of the research, including that by Henrik Fisker and UCLA, uses graphene as the two-dimensional material. Yeonwoong Eric Jung from UCF says it#39;s a challenge to integrate graphene with other materials used in supercapacitors, though. That#39;s why his team wrapped 2D metal materials (TMDs) just a few atoms thick around highly-conductive 1D nanowires, letting electrons pass quickly from the core to the shell. That yielded a fast charging material with high energy and power density that#39;s relatively simple to produce. ;We developed a simple chemical synthesis approach so we can very nicely integrate the existing materials with the two-dimensional materials,; Jung says. The research is in early days and not y for commercialization, but it looks promising. ;For small electronic devices, our materials are surpassing the conventional ones worldwide in terms of energy density, power density and cyclic stability,; Choudhary said.“对于小型的电子设备,我们的材料在能量密度、功率密度和循环稳定性方面超越了世界范围内的常规产品。” /201612/481502
