I hear a beep Oh, theres a fire truck really right outside my office But the lack of progress weve made in the past decade 然而 由于我们在上个10年取得的进展很小has convinced me we need to start talking about this 我决定要开始公开讨论这点I graduated from HBS in 1995 我是1995年从HBS毕业的and I thought it was completely clear that by the time 当时我想 等到我们这届someone from my year was invited to speak at this podium 有人被邀请到这个讲台演讲的时候we would have achieved equality in the workforce 我们一定已经实现了工作上的男女平等But women at the top C-level jobs 但是在C级别的工作上are stuck at 15-16 percent 女性的比例始终停留在15%到16%and have not moved in a decade 10年来一点都没有变化Not even close to 50% 离50%还差很远and worse no longer growing 而且更糟的是 已经停止增长We need to acknowledge openly that 我们需要公开承认在执行级别的领导层gender remains an issue at the highest levels of leadership 性别仍然是个大问题The promise of equality is not equality We need to start talking about this 我们需要就此进行谈论201511/410529Its easier to help schizophrenics who perceive相对而言帮助精神分裂症患者更容易that theres something foreign inside of them that needs to be exorcised,他们认为自己身体里面有某些异质需要被驱除but its difficult with depressives,但对于抑郁症患者来说这很难because we believe we are seeing the truth. I became obsessed with that sentence: ;But the truth lies.;我非常喜欢这句话“事实是会说谎的。”And I discovered, as I talked to depressive people,当我与抑郁症患者交谈时我发现that they have many delusional perceptions. People will say, ;No one loves me.;人们会说,“没人爱我。”And you say, ;I love you, your wife loves you, your mother loves you.;然后你说,“我爱你,你的妻子爱你,你的母亲爱你。”You can answer that one pretty ily, at least for most people. But people who are depressed will also say,但是抑郁的人还会说;No matter what we do, were all just going to die in the end.;“不论我们做什么,最终都是要死的。”Or theyll say, ;There can be no true communion between two human beings. Each of us is trapped in his own body.;我们每个人都被自己的身体所束缚了。“To which you have to say,对于这个你只有回应说;Thats true, but I think we should focus right now on what to have for breakfast.;“这点没错,但我觉得我们眼下要考虑的是早上该吃什么。“A lot of the time, what they are expressing is not illness, but insight,许多时候困扰他们的不是疾病本身,而是对一些事实的偏执and one comes to think whats really extraordinary他们会对一些事实超乎常人的在意is that most of us know about those existential questions and they dont distract us very much. There was a study I particularly liked in which a group of depressed我有一个特别喜欢的研究,是要一组抑郁症患者and a group of non-depressed people were asked to play a game for an hour,和一组非抑郁症患者分别打一小时的and at the end of the hour,一小时结束的时候问他们they were asked how many little monsters they thought they had killed. The depressive group was usually accurate to within about 10 percent,抑郁组的往往准确,误差不超过百分之十and the non-depressed people guessed between 15 and 20 times as many little monsters as they had actually killed. A lot of people said, when I chose to write about my depression,当我决定写下自己的抑郁经历时,许多人说that it must be very difficult to be out of that closet, to have people know. They said, ;Do people talk to you differently?;他们说,”人们会用不一样的口吻跟你说话吗?“And I said, ;Yes, people talk to me differently. They talk to me differently insofar as they start telling me about their experience,这种不一样体现在人们会告诉我他们自己的经历or their sisters experience, or their friends experience. Things are different because now I know that depression is the family secret that everyone has. 201602/426251Ive always wanted to be a cyborg. One of my favorite shows as a kid was ;The Six Million Dollar Man,;我小时候最喜欢的电视剧之一是“无敌金刚”,它的造价是六百万美元。and this is a little bit closer to the 240 dollar man or so, but --而这玩意儿的价值挺相近的,大约是240万美元,但是——At at any rate. I would normally feel very self-conscious and geeky wearing this around,不管怎样。而且我经常会感到拘谨,感觉有点儿怪异,穿着这个走来走去,but a few days ago I saw one world-renowned statistician swallowing swords on stage here,嗯,但是呢,今天前我看见一位举世闻名的数据专家在这个舞台上吞剑,so I figure its OK amongst this group. But thats not what I want to talk about today. I want to talk about toys, and the power that I see inherent in them. When I was a kid, I attended Montessori school up to sixth grade in Atlanta, Georgia. And at the time I didnt think much about it,那时,我并没有觉得有啥了不起。but then later, I realized that that was the high point of my education. From that point on, everything else was pretty much downhill. And it wasnt until later, as I started making games, that --等到后来,当我开始制作电脑游戏,那时我真的——I really actually think of them more as toys. People call me a game designer, but I really think of these things more as toys. But I started getting very interested in Maria Montessori and her methods,我开始对玛利亚·蒙特梭利和她的教育方法and the way she went about things,以及她的处事方式感兴趣。and the way she thought it very valuable for kids to kind of discover things on their own她很重视让孩子们自己去发现,rather than being taught these things overtly. And she would design these toys, where kids in playing with the toys她会设计一些寓教于乐的玩具,would actually come to understand these deep principles of life and nature through play. And since they discovered those things, it really stuck with them so much more,因为这些道理是他们自己发现的,所以他们就会牢牢记住它们,and also they would experience their own failures;而且他们还会经历失败,there was a failure-based aspect to learning there. It was very important. And so, the games that I do, I think of really more as modern Montessori toys. And I really kind of want them to be presented in a way并且我真心希望它们能够帮助小孩们to where kids can kind of explore and discover their own principles. So a few years ago, I actually started getting very interested in the SETI program. And thats the way I work. I get interested in different kinds of subjects, I dive in,我对各种领域都有兴趣,我潜入其中,I research them, and then I try to figure out how to craft a toy around that,探索研究它,然后想办法做出一种与之相关的游戏,so that other people can kind of experience the same sense of discovery这样其他人就能体验到和我在学习这个课题时as I did as I was learning that subject. And it kind of led me to astrobiology, which is the study of possible life in the universe. And then Drakes Equation, which is looking at the probability of life arising on planets,然后是德瑞克方程式,大家知道,它关注的是行星上可能产生生命的概率,how long it might last, how many planets are out there, stuff like that. And I started looking at how interesting Drakes Equation was,我开始关注这个极其有趣的方程,because it spanned all these different subjects --因为它涉及了各种不同的学科——physics, chemistry, sociology, economics, astronomy. And another thing that really impressed me a long time ago was ;Powers of Ten,; Charles and Ray Eames film.另一个很久以来让我印象深刻的是查尔斯·伊默斯和蕾·伊默斯夫妇的影片《十的次方》And I started putting those two together and wondering,当我把这两者合起来看时,我想到could I build a toy where kids would kind of trip across all these interesting principles of life,我能不能建造一个玩具,使得小孩们可以在生命所有的这些有趣的、as it exists and as it might go in the future. Things where you might trip across things like the Copernican Principle, the Fermi Paradox,你可能会遇到哥白尼定律、费米佯谬the Anthropic Principle, the origin of life. And so Im going to show you a toy today that Ive been working on,而我今天要向大家展示的是我正在创作中的一个玩具,that I think of more than anything else as kind of a philosophy toy. In playing this toy, you kind of -- this will bring up philosophical questions in you. This games called ;Spore.; Ive been working on it for several years. Its getting pretty close to finished now. It occurs at all these different scales, first of all, from very, very small to very, very large. Im just going to pop in at the start of the game. 201512/418290Maybe thats just the world we live in. But graduates, this is your world to change. As I said, I am a proud son of the South. Its my home, and I will always love it. But for the last 17 years Ive built a life in Silicon Valley; its a special place. The kind of place where theres no problem that cant be solved. No matter how difficult or complex, thats part of its essential quality. A very sincere sort of optimism. Back in the 90s, Apple ran an advertising campaign we called “Think Different.” It was pretty simple. Every ad was a photograph of one of our heroes. People who had the audacity to challenge and change the way we all live. People like Gandhi and Jackie Robinson, Martha Graham and Albert Einstein, Amelia Earhart and Miles Davis. These people still inspire us. They remind us to live by our deepest values and reach for our highest aspirations. They make us believe that anything is possible. A friend of mine at Apple likes to say the best way to solve a problem is to walk into a room full of Apple engineers and proclaim, “this is impossible.” I can tell you, they will not accept that. And neither should you. So thats the one thing Id like to bring to you all the way from Cupertino, California. 201512/418127Da jia hao! Chun jie kuai le! Mel and I would like to say ;Happy New Year; to all our great friends here in China and back home in America. This is our second Chinese New Year in Beijing, we love seeing all the festive red lanterns and firework displays as part of this great holiday, and we know that this is a really special time to reunite with family and to enjoy holiday meals with friends and loved ones. And we have enjoyed great adventures in this past year in China. Last year, we got a travel to see elephant conservation efforts in Yunnan. In the spring, we enjoyed the cultural traditions at Tibet and Qinghai, and took a fabulous trip overnight on the train between the two provinces. This summer, we finally got to see the Terracotta Warriors in Xian. And this fall, we celebrated the legacy of the Flying Tigers in Chengdu. Weve also recently traveled to Hainan to support sea turtle conservation. Mel and I were also so thrilled to join President Obama in welcoming President Xi for his first state visit to Washington this past year. As we head into this New Year, Ive got to tell you that I am so optimistic about the future. Xin nian kuai le! Gong xi fa cai! Good luck to the Year of the Monkey. Zhu ni men hou nian ji xiang!

My fathers father worked in the Chevy plant in Flint, Michigan. He was an assemblyline worker. He drove his two children here to Anna Arbor, and told them: That is where youre going to go to college.I know it sounds funny now. Both of his kids actually did graduate from Michigan. That was the American dream. His daughter, Beverly, is also with us today. My Grandpa used to carry an ;Alley Oop; hammer,a heavy iron pipe with a big hunk of lead melted on the end.The workers made them during the sit-down strikes to protect themselves. When I was growing up, we used that hammer whenever we needed to pound a stake or something into the yard.It is wonderful that most people dont need to carry a heavy blunt object for protection anymore. But just in case, I brought it with me.My Dad became a professor at uh…Michigan State, and I was an incredibly lucky boy.A professors life is pretty flexible, and he was able to spend oodles of time raising me.Could there be a better upbringing than university brat? What Im trying to tell you is that this is way more than just a homecoming for me.Its not easy for me to express how proud I am to be here, with my Mom, my brother and my wife Lucy, and with all of you,at this amazing institution that is responsible for my very existence.I am thrilled for all of you,and Im thrilled for your families and friends,as all of us join this great, big Michigan family I feel Ive been a part of all of all my life. What Im also trying to tell you is that I know exactly what it feels like to be sitting in your seat, listening to some old gasbag give a long-winded commencementspeech.Dont worry. Ill be brief. 201307/248558

And no matter what you want to do with your life, I guarantee that youll need an education to do it. You want to be a doctor, or a teacher, or a police officer? You want to be a nurse or an architect, a lawyer or a member of our military? Youre going to need a good education for every single one of those careers. You cannot drop out of school and just drop into a good job. Youve got to train for it and work for it and learn for it. And this isnt just important for your own life and your own future. What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country. The future of America depends on you. What youre learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future. Youll need the knowledge and problem-solving skills you learn in science and math to cure diseases like cancer and AIDS, and to develop new energy technologies and protect our environment. Youll need the insights and critical-thinking skills you gain in history and social studies to fight poverty and homelessness, crime and discrimination, and make our nation more fair and more free. Youll need the creativity and ingenuity you develop in all your classes to build new companies that will create new jobs and boost our economy. We need every single one of you to develop your talents and your skills and your intellect so you can help us old folks solve our most difficult problems. If you dont do that—if you quit on school—youre not just quitting on yourself, youre quitting on your country. /201304/235062
