Now from the Boston Museum of Science Sci-tech today on NECN. We are headed to the moon on Sci-tech today. NASA recently launched two robotic missions in an effort to learn more about the moon and its environment. Joining us now from the Museum of Science Boston is researcher Tony Case, a graduate student at Boston University. Good to have you with us, Tony. Good to be here, thanks for having me. So what can you tell us about these missions? Well, LRO is a spacecraft thats around the moon right now. Its orbiting really close to the surface. Its about 30 miles above the surface of the moon. And therere seven instruments on the spacecraft, they are all taking a wide array of measurements of the entire surface of the moon. Along with LRO launching on the same rocket was another spacecraft called LCROSS, which is on its way to the moon now. And the main goal of both of these missions was basically that open an advance scout to gather information that might enable us go back to the moon more safely and more easily in the future if we choose to do so with manned missions. Interesting, alright in the long names of these, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is the LRO and the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite is LCROSS.Thats right. What kind of information do we need to get from these satellites to help us to someday return to the moon. Well LRO is giving us a lot of different information and the one piece of information that is personally close to my heart is the instrument that I worked on and what it measures is radiation—the radiation environment around the moon. So this radiation is, its energetic particles that are coming from outside of the solar system and also from our own sun. And it can cause damage both to human cells and to electronics. So this is the instrument we built to measure that radiation. Its called CRATER — the Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation. So this is around the moon now this is a testing version but the flight model is around the moon. And its measuring the radiation right now.LRO发回了许多信息,其中一条我最关心的,也是我正在研究的就是测量辐射的仪器。 CRATER(Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation),但这只是测试版,正式版正在人造卫星上测量辐射强度。All right, and that was developed at BU and MIT. It was, yeah, along with other institutions ,but yeah it was headed here in Boston. Pretty exciting. What about water? They are looking for water and how important it is to find it or not find it? Well yeah.Thats one of the main goals of both the LRO mission and the LCROSS mission to find water along with any other resources that we might be able to use. So LRO is..ha..has different imagers that are taking images of the surface that might tell us whether there is water there, and also the LCROSS spacecraft is designed almost exclusively to search for this water. So LCROSS has it launched along with LRO on the same rocket and when we detached from LCROSS, it stayed attached to the empty fuel tank left over from the rocket. So tomorrow morning about 7:30 in the morning LCROSS releases the fuel tank. The fuel tank flies in to the surface of the moon, impacts and throws up a huge dust cloud. So hopefully in this dust cloud, will be dust along with anything else that might have been mixed in along with the regulus on the moon in the soil. And so as LCROSS flies to this dust could, its able to measure everything thats in that dust hopefully confirming the presence of water. ll right very very interesting, TONY CASE, a graduate student of BU. Thanks very much for joining us. Thanks a lot. And we will let people know that tomorrow at the Museum of Science from 9 to 1 you can watch a of LCROSS impact and see presentations by the CRATER team they will be on hand to answer questions about LRO and LCROSS and to demonstrate the instrument. taking a wide array of measurements: 201205/180556

NOT long ago, Barack Obama was hoping that high-speed trains would provide America with the desired ;twofer;. First, building the special tracks and locomotives would put a division or two of Americarsquo;s army of unemployed back to work. Then, once built, the trains would get people out of cars and planes and to their destinations in a way that would be cleaner and use less foreign oil. But those dreams have mostly died. Republicans have decided that government spending, not outdated infrastructure, is the real bogeyman, and Republican governors in Florida, Wisconsin and Ohio have rejected federal money to begin building. Only in California does the dream live on. As Governor Jerry Brown, aged 73 and a Democrat, likes to remember, another big railway project in the 19th century connected the young state to the rest of America. In the 1960s his father, Pat, served as governor and built ambitious aqueducts and highways. In the 1970s Mr Brown himself became governor for the first time, and had visions of his own grand projects. These, as much as his theological bent and his liking for meditation, earned him the nickname ;Governor Moonbeam;. Today Mr Brown still sparkles as he mocks the ;dystopian journalists; and ;declinists; who obstinately fail to see that Californiarsquo;s population will grow from just under 38m now to about 50m in 2030; and that, unless the state has something like Japanrsquo;s bullet trains, Californians will choke in traffic jams or go mad waiting for delayed flights in inadequate airports. Of late, he has compared his statersquo;s planned high-speed train to the Panama and Suez canals. And he has added that if China, Germany, Spain and Japan can build one, there is no earthly reason why California shouldnrsquo;t do so too. Californiarsquo;s voters used to agree. In a 2008 ballot measure (before Mr Brown became governor for the second time), they approved billion in bonds to fund just such a train. As advertised, it was to connect the two big population centres, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area. Speeds were to reach 220mph, giving a travel time of less than three hours; the project was to cost billion and be completed as early as 2020. Then the iron law of infrastructure projects asserted itself. According to current estimates, the train would in fact cost three times as much or more, and take 13 years longer to build. Mr Obama still wants to help; he has asked Congress for billion in railway funding over five years, of which .5 billion may go to California. But even with the bond funds, those dollops would cover less than 13% of the estimated cost. Republicans are in no mood to allocate more. It gets worse. After the ballot measure, it was decided that construction should begin not in the two population centres but in the vast and flat farmlands of the Central Valley, where building is much easier. This means that funds could run dry before the big cities are even connected to the network. A high-speed train would then run through sparsely populated countryside, with hardly anybody riding it. Some call this a ;train to nowhere;, others a white elephant. Using a rather more original metaphor Richard White, a professor of history at Stanford, calls it ;a Vietnam of transportation: easy to begin and difficult and expensive to stop.;更糟糕的是,在投票表决后,政府决定将铁路的起止点改建在中央大峡谷的耕地上,而非原定的两个人口密集区,与之前相比这里幅员辽阔,地势平坦易于施工。

Is it something we should be nervous aboutthe worlds second largest economy steaming to storm? Well, you think so Emily. And itdefinitely, its more proved thatChinas been impacted by the globalslowdown we’ve all talked about. For example, we saw the second quarter of GDPcome at 7.6%, that was its weakest level in more than 3 years. And just today,ChinasPMI came in at that 8 months low than you’d mentioned. Now take a look at thenumbers.Chinasofficial Purchasing Managers Index for July, PMI came in as 50.1%. Last monthit came in at this: 50.2%. So we’re not talking about the big drop right. Butthis is a drop nonetheless. The good news is thatChinahas been expanding for all ofthis year at least. Take a look at these, these numbers here. The bad news isthat it’s getting to that all important 50-mark and I raised that becauseanything below 50 indicates contraction. And last summer we saw that was backhere in November. Now still HSs chief economist Qu Hongbin, he was all thatimpressed about todays numbers. This is what he thought aboutChinasJuly data. He said this: This is far from inspiring, asChinas growth slowdown has notbeen reversed meaningfully, and he also added: and downside pressures persistwith external markets continuing to deteriorate. He also added we still alsoexpect Beijingto step up a policy easing in the coming month just support growth andemployment. But of the back of todays PMI data not all, not all that greatstill growing. Beijingdid pledge to keep economic growth stable and did cheering investigators to buyinto the stocks today and has mentioned earlier. The Shanghai Composite andHang Seng did both rise while all the other markets did end in the run. 201210/203968

Business The economics of Groupon The dismal scoop on Groupon商业 团购网的经济学 团购网站惨淡的独家新闻A micro-economist assesses Groupon微观经济学家评估团购网站GrouponON OCTOBER 24th Groupon says it will start its ;roadshow;.Groupon声称将于10月24日开始;路演;。The social-media sensation, which offers online coupons for bargains at local shops and restaurants, is planning an initial public offering later this year. (IPO)。Valuations as high as billion were until recently bandied around, but that now seems wildly optimistic. Groupon will lose 0m on revenues of .69 billion in 2011, predicts Benchmark, a consultancy. That is an ocean of red ink. Groupon started with a nifty idea. Its website offered a ;daily deal; whereby consumers could buy a product or service very cheaply if a minimum number of people signed up.Groupon公司源于一个奇妙的想法。 People would nag their friends to come to the same bar or shop. The merchant would get new customers. Groupon would take a cut. For merchants, this model has big advantages. They are advertised on Groupons phenomenally popular website. This is especially useful for new businesses that no one has heard of. Groupon helps merchants manage capacity, too. For example, a restaurant might sell vouchers that are redeemable only on Tuesdays, thus filling tables on a quiet night. Or a Pilates studio might use vouchers to manage class sizes. Once a client has paid for the voucher, the studio collects the fee even if she is hung-over and doesnt turn up. Groupon also allows merchants to charge different people different prices for the same product. A student might buy theatre tickets on Groupon for half price. A businessman with no time to shop around online might buy the same tickets for full price. Without Groupon, it is harder for the theatre to find out what people are willing to pay. It could charge both punters full price, in which case the student may stay at home. Or it could charge both the lower price, in which case it makes less money. Groupon created a new market. This is a boon to consumers, but confers no lasting ;first-mover; advantage on Groupon. Its business model is unpatentable and simple to replicate, so there are aly more than 20 copycats. Groupon aspires to be global, but the markets it serves are intensely local. Internet selling is best suited to ;experience goods;. These are goods and services the quality of which you cannot judge until you experience them, such as haircuts and Thai meals, so there is no advantage in having a bricks-and-mortar shop for people to browse in. (In North America 83% of Groupons deals fall into this category.) The trouble with experience goods is that generally you cannot separate manufacture from delivery: you cannot cook a meal in Guangzhou and eat it in New York. So for Groupon, each city is a separate market. (Big ones, such as London, are subdivided into regions.) In each neighbourhood, it must vie with copycats to sign up merchants. Its marketing costs are expected to be a painful 8m this year. This is why it loses money. A final woe: the Groupon model is open to abuse. Nicole Peters, an avid online shopper, describes how she bought a massage via one of Groupons rivals. The day before the appointment, the massage firm e-mailed her to say it had gone bust. Ms Peters also bought a voucher for several pairs of mens underpants. When she logged onto the suppliers website, there were only huge pairs or bright pink ones available. She says she will never shop this way again. Groupons webpage includes a guide to avoiding arguments with merchants, which suggests such tiffs are common. In short, Groupon is still the king of online discounts. But with so many pretenders around, it may be unwise to pay a premium for its shares. On October 19th the firm was reportedly considering scaling back its IPO. /201212/216129

Books and Arts;New film文艺;新片上映Method in the madness疯狂中的理智A searching look at what caused the split between Freud and Jung深度挖掘:弗洛伊德、荣格决裂的原因Psychoanalysis, as practised by Carl Jung and his mentor, Sigmund Freud, in Zurich and Vienna in the early 1900s came to be known as “a dangerous method”. It is a good title for this absorbing film, written by Christopher Hampton and based on John Kerrs 1994 book about Jung, Freud and Sabina Spielrein, which explores the role Spielrein (Keira Knightley) played in the two mens lives. An 18-year-old Russian patient of Jung (Michael Fassbender), who cured her psychotic hysteria in 1904, Spielrein later became an analyst and an inspiration both to Jung and to Freud (Viggo Mortensen). According to Mr Kerr, she also became Jungs lover, a breach of professional ethics that contributed to the discord between the two analysts and their acrimonious parting of ways in 1913. Directed by David Cronenberg, “A Dangerous Method” contains no exploding heads to remind viewers of his 1981 film, “Scanners”. But Spielrein certainly comes close to blowing up in the opening sequence, in which Ms Knightley gives a harrowing portrayal of the symptoms of hysteria that turns her face into a twisted, jut-jawed mask of terror at the sadistic paternal abuse that is the cause of the characters illness. Extrapolating a bit, the film-makers speculate that the doctor-patient affair was spiced up by re-enactments of those paternal spankings.《危险方法》由大卫·柯南伯格执导。 As “A Dangerous Method” ths its way through the labyrinth of words that these brilliant, questioning people use to probe, seduce and wound one another, it deftly dramatises the intellectual differences that brought about the Freud-Jung split without actually giving either man the last word. Portraying Freud as a witty patriarch, the film seems to side with him against his stiff-necked protégé. Freudians will conclude that Jung is wallowing in mysticism to hide from the truth and that his sexual urges almost destroyed his marriage and his patients sanity. It is a tribute to both mens ideas, and the creativity of the film-makers, that Jungians (and Cronenbergians) are equally free to see the myth-haunted Swiss psychoanalyst as a tragic incarnation of Orpheus, who should never have looked back at Eurydice when rescuing her from the underworld of Hades. /201209/197678

One of the biggest problems at this hugeenvironmental summit here in Rio de Janeiro has been accommodation. Now luckily a few hotels and hotels like S and C have pitched in to help. Now the entrance is a little unusually herethats because each apartment has its own garage slot basically because most ofthe clients here dont want their cars to be seen from the street. Most of clients for this room usually payby the hour, you can see why, there are these mirrors on the ceiling, rightover here you have own private heated pool, just around the corner, there is anarea for pole dancing. But these days a good thirds ofthe clients in this hotel or motel are actually attending the Rio+20 environmental summit and thats because most of the city hotels are eitheroverbooked or overcharging. Now for the people staying they are getting a goodprice even a derate. And thats because the owners see a segment that has anopportunity for growth. With the world cup and the Olympicsattendance will be for people to use these quick turnover hotels even more. You know likely to find one of the Rio +20 delegates in these dramatic rooms , like thisone, the evil room. But you could not end up staying right next door. 201210/205377

Sirte, where he was born in a Bedouin tent in the sand-wastes and died amid the crackle of sniper fire; Misrata, where he went to a private tutor to learn history; Benghazi, where at military college he began to plot revolution; and Tripoli, where in the sprawling half-bombed barracks at Bab el-Aziziya he pitched his tent again, the Brother-Leader, insisting he would never leave until he had fired the last bullet he possessed. When death overtook him, he had ruled Libya for 42 years. The handsome, magnetic army captain who had overthrown King Idris in 1969 had become a robed buffoon, with a surgically smoothed face, a mop of dyed black hair and, until she scuttled home, a blonde Ukrainian nurse on his arm. Yet he was no less cunning. Behind the designer shades his eyes were those of a fox. By sheer imposition of the cult of himself, he had held his tribally fractious country together. He ruled unsparingly. In his Libya, dissent was punishable by death. A private press was forbidden, and political parties banned. Several dozen deaths a year of political opponents were attributed to his secret police, acting on tip-offs from the surveillance committees to which around 10% of Libyans belonged. In Abu Salim prison, on one night in 1996, 1,200 political prisoners died. If his enemies fled abroad, his hired assassins found these “scum” and killed them. The colonel’s writ, as recorded in his “Green Book” of rambling political philosophy, replaced the rule of law. His rule had begun better. Like Venezuela’s Hugo Chávez, a rare ally, he came to power determined to secure oil revenues for his people rather than for foreign corporations. Having renegotiated the oil contracts, he redistributed wealth and saw Libya grow rich—though no one grew rich faster than his own clan, with billions invested abroad. Oil gave him power far beyond the confines of his dilapidated state. He began to see himself as the leader of the Third World, the voice of the world’s poor, the King of Africa (when, in , he chaired the Organisation of African y) and the patron of world revolution. He invited to Libya for military training such bloodstained luminaries as Liberia’s Charles Taylor and Sierra Leone’s rebel leader, Foday Sankoh. He gave money to Colombia’s FARC and the IRA, and tried to radicalise even the Maoris of New Zealand. Wherever anti-Western or anti-parliamentary feelings stirred, he was there, sowing trouble; for as he said in the “Green Book”, the only true democracy was the direct, even violent, expression of the will of the people—except in Libya. Around this figure the West, for four decades, prevaricated. The young colonel’s “Third Mystery of Socialism”, a middle way between capitalism and communism which, in his words, solved all the contradictions of either system, seemed unthreatening enough. His people’s communes were blatantly powerless, his own “brotherly” power absolute, but then absolutism was common enough in oil-producing states. He was not a Marxist, at least: Egypt’s nationalist hero, Gamal Abdel Nasser, was his model, rather than Lenin. And he had oil. Eventually tolerance snapped. In the 1980s, as Colonel Qaddafi shopped round the Far East for nuclear bombs, sponsored terror groups, invaded Chad in the cause of a “Greater Libya” and sent agents to blow up a Pan Am airliner over Lockerbie in Scotland, he became a pariah: Ronald Reagan’s “mad dog”, to be bombed until he whimpered. But by the new century he was ingratiating himself. He said the right things about al-Qaeda; offered his nuclear programme for inspection, and in 2003 abandoned it; paid compensation for Lockerbie; and, apparently chastened by his own military incompetence, seemed to have forgotten his windy pan-Arab and pan-Islamist dreams. In a world suddenly teeming with dangerous Islamists, he was now far from the worst. At the G8 in he shook hands with Barack Obama. The same year he was allowed to speak for more than an hour at the UN, repaying its tolerance by tearing from the UN Charter the pages that talked about democracy. Pitching his tent安营扎寨He never forgot his origins among the desert wanderers and cattlemen. Despite the gilded mermaids and white pianos of his ludicrous quarters in Tripoli, he preferred to live in a tent, and always travelled abroad with one. When not in uniform, he wore flowing robes. His grandest project, the Great Man-Made River, brought water from southern aquifers to the northern cities. Precious green was his colour, in flags, Book and billboards. His socialism, at root, was based in desert customs of shared property and grazing land. His deep devotion to the army was the gratitude of a poor boy who had used it as a ladder to higher social rank and more grandiose ambitions. Almost to the last, too, he tried to pose as one of his people. When protesters first erupted on the streets of Tripoli this year, he offered to protest along with them. Surely, after years of venomous pabulum from his “Green Book”, they would have learned to think as he did. But they were beginning to dare to think differently—about Libya, and about him. 201205/183546
