Hi, everybody. Over the past few months, Ive laid out a series of commonsense ideas to reignite the true engine of our economic growth: a rising, thriving middle class. The way I see it, there are three areas where we need to focus. One: making America a magnet for good jobs. Two: making sure our workers have the education and skills they need to do those jobs. And three: making sure your hard work leads to a decent living. Ive also been visiting cities across the country that are doing some interesting and creative things along these lines. On Friday, I stopped by a factory in Baltimore thats creating good jobs here at home by exporting digging equipment abroad. I with young kids in a pre-K program, where kids are getting a head start learning the skills theyll need to succeed in life. And I stopped by a program thats helping folks in tough circumstances– especially low-income dads—get the training and guidance they need to find work and support their families. Thats why I like getting out of the Washington echo chamber whenever I can—because too often, our politics arent focused on the same things you are. Working hard. Supporting your family and your community. Making sure your kids have every chance in life. More than anything, the American people make me optimistic about where were headed as a nation. Especially after all weve been through the past several years. And that should encourage us to work even harder on the issues that matter to you. In a little over three years, our businesses have created more than 6.5 million new jobs.3年多一点的时间里,我们的企业创造了650多万个新的就业岗位。And while our unemployment rate is still too high, it s the lowest its been since 2008. But now we need to create even more good, middle-class jobs, and we need to do it faster. Corporate profits have skyrocketed to all-time highs. But now we need to get middle-class wages and incomes rising too. Our housing market is healing. But we still need to help a lot more families stay in their homes, or refinance to take advantage of historically low rates. And our deficits are shrinking at the fastest rate in decades. But now we need to budget in a smarter way that doesnt hurt middle-class families or harm critical investments in our future. So in a lot of sectors, things are looking up. The American auto industry is thriving. American energy is booming. And American ingenuity in our tech sector has the potential to change the way we do almost everything. In the coming weeks, Im going to visit more cities like Baltimore, and Austin, Texas—where I was two weeks ago;在接下来的几周,我将继续访问像巴尔的、德克萨斯的奥斯汀这样的城市,两周前我刚刚去过那里;places where Americans are coming together to strengthen their own communities and economies—and in the process, making this country better for all of us. And Im going to keep trying to work with both parties in Washington to make progress on your priorities. Because I know that if we come together around creating more jobs, educating more of our kids, and building new ladders of opportunity for everyone whos willing to climb them—well all prosper, together. Thanks. And have a great weekend. 201305/241313

My Dad was valedictorian of Flint Mandeville High School class of 1956 for about 90 kids. I happened across his graduating speech recently, and it blew me away. 53 years ago my Dad said: “···we are entering a changing world,父亲在他53年前的毕业典礼上这样说:“……我们进入了一个日新月异的新时代,one of automation and employment change where education is an economic necessity. We will have increased periods of time to do as we wish,我们有足够的时间去实现我们的梦想,as our work week and retirement age continue to decline and we wish that were true. We shall take part in, or witness, developments in science, medicine, and industry that we can not dream of today ...我们将参与或者见我们做梦也想不到的当今的科技、医药和工业的快速发展……It is said that the future of any nation can be determined by the care and preparation given to its youth. If all the youths of America were as fortunate in securing an education as we have been,如果所有的美国青年都能像我们这代一样有幸受到教育,then the future of the ed States would be even more bright than it is today.” If my Dad was alive today,如果我爸爸能活到今天,the thing I think he would be most happy about is that Lucy and I have a baby in the hopper. I think he would have been annoyed that I hadn’t gotten my Ph.D. yet (Thanks, Michigan!). Dad was so full of insights, of excitement about new things,我的父亲是一个对新事物充满洞悉力和的人,that to this day, I often wonder what he would think about some new development. If he were here today—well, it would be one of the best days of his life. Hed be like a kid in a candy store. For a day, hed be young again. Many of us are fortunate enough to be here with family. Some of us have dear friends and family to go home to. And who knows, perhaps some of you, like Lucy and I, are dreaming of future families of your own . Just like me,your families brought you here, and you brought them here. Please keep them close and remember: they are what really matters in life. Thanks, Mom; Thanks, Lucy. And thank you, all, very much. 201308/252975

Dont let complexity stop you. Be activists. Take on the big inequities. I feel sure it will be one of the great experiences of your lives. You graduates are coming of age in an amazing time. As you leave Harvard, you have technology that members of my class never had. You have awareness of global inequity, which we did not have. And with that awareness, you likely also have an informed conscience that will torment you if you abandon these people whose lives you could change with modest effort. You have more than we had; you must start sooner, and carry on longer. And I hope you will come back here to Harvard 30 years from now and reflect on what you have done with your talent and your energy. I hope you will judge yourselves not on your professional accomplishments alone, but also on how well you have addressed the worlds deepest inequities...on how well you treated people a world away who have nothing in common with you but their humanity. Good luck.

We all want an America defined by deep and meaningful equality, from civil rights to labor rights, from womens rights to gay rights--from ending discrimination to promoting unionization, to providing help for the most important job there is: caring for our families. And we all want to restore Americas standing in the world, to end the war in Iraq, and once again lead by the power of our values--and to join with our allies to confront our shared challenges, from poverty and genocide to terrorism and global warming. You know, Ive been involved in politics and public life in one way or another for four decades. And during those--during those 40 years, our country has voted 10 times for president. Democrats won only three of those times, and the man who won two of those election is with us today. We made tremendous progress during the 90s under a Democratic president, with a flourishing economy and our leadership for peace and security respected around the world. /201307/250227

Hi, everybody. One of the things that makes America great is our passion for innovation – that spirit of discovery and entrepreneurship that helps us meet any challenge. One of the greatest challenges of our time is climate change. Over the last seven years, weve made historic investments in clean energy that helped private sector companies create tens of thousands of good jobs. And today, clean power from the wind or the sun is actually cheaper in many communities than dirtier, conventional power. Its helped grow our economy and cut our total carbon pollution more than any other country on earth. That leadership helped bring nearly 200 nations together in Paris around the most ambitious climate agreement in history. And in Paris, we also launched one of the most important partnerships ever assembled to accelerate this kind of clean energy innovation around the world. Investors and business leaders including Bill Gates, Meg Whitman, and Mark Zuckerberg joined us, pledging their own money to help advance new technologies to the market. Thats important because well only meet this challenge if the private sector helps lead the way. As I said in my State of the Union Address, rather than subsidize the past, we should invest in the future. Thats why the budget I will send to Congress this Tuesday will double funding for clean energy research and development by 2020. This will include new investments to help the private sector create more jobs faster, lower the cost of clean energy faster, and help clean, renewable power outcompete dirty fuels in every state. And while Republicans in Congress are still considering their position on climate change, many of them realize that clean energy is an incredible source of good-paying jobs for their constituents. Thats why we were able to boost clean energy research and development in last years budget agreement. And I hope they support my plan to double that kind of investment. Because its making a difference across the country. In Idaho, our Battery Test Center is helping electric cars run longer on a single charge. In Ohio, entrepreneurs are pioneering new ways to harness wind power from the Great Lakes. In Tennessee, researchers are partnering with utilities to boost storage and solar power to create a more resilient electric grid. The point is, all across the country, folks are putting their differences aside to face this challenge as one. Washington should do the same. Thats how were going to solve this challenge – together. And thats how were going to give our kids and grandkids the future they deserve – one with a safe, secure, and prosperous planet. Thanks, everybody, and have a great weekend.201602/426537
