Coming up with Google Doodle ideas actually comes from all over the place. It comes from not only the doodlers themselves, which is us, but also comes from other people who work at Google, and our users from all around the world. And then we try to find that suggestion, and solve that as a creative problem in the most exciting way that we can manage to do. We basically just try to celebrate anything that#39;s techy, and fun, and geeky, and artistic. We also have ones that we do every year. So, like Halloween, for example, we know it#39;s gonna come every year, so we can start planning way in advance. The fortunate thing about finding inspiration for Doodles is that we aly have a subject matter. For instance, if we were celebrating Saint Patrick#39;s Day, we might look into Irish culture. I usually start with research, look up reference imagery, and go from there, start sketching, brainstorming ideas. So the inspiration comes from learning about what we are drawing. Doodle 4 Google is awesome because it gives kids all across the country the opportunity to take our jobs for a day. This year, in particular, is really cool. I#39;m really excited about the theme. The theme is definitely, to me, really just super cool. I mean, my whole life, I#39;ve just dreamed about time travel. I would definitely go to see the dinosaurs. I may go back to the Renaissance, just to see what they were doing. I really find, like, the 1930s kind of interesting. I mean, I have no idea where I would want to go. But to be able to express what you want to do on paper and show that to everybody, that#39;s just really cool. Okay, I have some advice for young artists: There#39;s no shortcuts. I would highly suggest that you draw everyday, and draw what you love. I think, above all, you should focus on having fun. When you genuinely have fun, it shows. You know, last year#39;s winner just drew exactly what he loves. That#39;s, you know, aliens devouring Google letters. And, you know, it wasn#39;t trying to be right. It was just him having fun, and that definitely registered with us. This year, the winning student is Matteo Lopez, from South San Francisco, California. I think...well, I cried. Honestly...seriously, if you look at the footage from last year, when Matteo Lopez won, I was having a moment. For me, the pinnacle of success, when I was growing up as a young artist, was to actually have my artwork pinned on the chalkboard, and, you know, have it shown in front of the whole class, that to me was...that was it! And for kids now to have their opportunity to have their artwork pinned on the homepage for millions of people to see, you know, that#39;s just awesome. Article/201410/339414The Warren Cup is made of silver, it#39;s a goblet, and it looks as though it would hold a pretty large glass of wine. It#39;s in the shape of a small sporting trophy, standing on a small base, a bit wonkily now, and it would once have had two handles, although those are now lost. But you can see at once that this is a work of supreme craftsmanship. The scenes on the cup are in relief, and they#39;ve been created by beating out the silver from the inside. Given the subject-matter, it must have been used at private parties, but it would certainly have commanded the admiration and the attention of everybody present. Lavish eating and drinking was one of the key rituals of the Roman world which, two thousand years ago, ran from Spain to Syria. Throughout the Empire, Roman officials and local bigwigs would use banquets to oil the wheels of politics and business, and to show off wealth and status. Roman women were generally excluded from events such as the drinking parties where our cup would have been found, and I think we can assume that it was intended for an all-male guest list. So I#39;m afraid you#39;ll have to imagine that you#39;re a man, arriving at a grand villa near Jerusalem, somewhere around the year 10. Slaves lead you through to an opulent dining area, where you recline with the other guests. The dining table is set with beautifully embellished silver platters and ornate vessels, and this is the context in which our cup would have been passed around among the guests. On it are shown two scenes of male love-making, set in a sumptuous private house. The lovers are depicted on draped couches similar to the ones that you, the guest, are lounging on. And you can see a lyre and pipes waiting to be played as the participants settle to their sensual pleasure. Here#39;s Classical historian Bettany Hughes. Article/201412/347611

12 Zodiac Signs and What They Mean十二星座大小事Hi, I#39;m Jenny Lynch, and I#39;m talking about the zodiac signs and what they mean. So the first sign of zodiac is Aries, and Aries is represented by a ram. Okay, and it#39;s a fire sign. So we know that Aries people have the qualities of being impulsive, of being leaders, of being very...impatient. They also are natural-born entrepreneurs. They wanna do things. They don#39;t wanna just sit here. They wanna just go and do things. Taurus, the Bull, does not move as fast as Aries. Taurus is grounded. It#39;s patient, but it also can be very stubborn. So that#39;s one of the qualities about Tauruses. They are fixed. Once they make up their mind, it#39;s hard to change it. With the Gemini, that#39;s the sign of the Twins. They are always changing their mind. Okay. It#39;s a dual sign. It#39;s an air sign, too. So, qualities of Geminis—endlessly curious, very social, friendly people, intellectual, too. And they like a lot of stimulation. When we get to Cancer, we are talking about the sensitive sign. It#39;s the Crab, and if the Crab gets sensitive, it will close down and run away. But they#39;re also very much into their family, and they#39;re very sweet and loving people. You just have to win their trust. When it comes to Leo, Leo is the Lion—roar, you#39;ve heard this before, but it does mean that the person is a very loyal person. Um, they are very honorable, generally. Generous, gregarious, those are other fine qualities. They can also be very talented. With Virgo, the Virgin, we are talking about somebody who is interested in health, nutrition, who#39;s very organized, usually, although the key word here is compulsive. And so either they#39;d be really neat, or they could be very sloppy, but the main thing about Virgos is that they love to serve other people. So if you have one in your life, you#39;re quite lucky. Now, we get into Libra. Libra is the sign of the Scales, and Libras are all about beauty, grace, refinement, the arts. They#39;re into relationship very much. You#39;ll never, ever, hardly, ever see a single Libra. We talk about Scorpio. Scorpio is the Scorpion. Okay. Um, it#39;s also the eagle. There#39;s two different types of Scorpios, they say: the ones that are very high with moral standing, and the other ones that go down. They take that role instead. So, when you#39;re thinking about a Scorpio, though, you#39;re thinking about someone who#39;s very intense, who is very driven, and who can very much wanna be a part of your life and merge. This is somebody who doesn#39;t take anything light-heartedly. Talking about the Sagittarius, we are talking about light-hearted. Sagittarius is the happy-go-lucky sign of the Archer. And they always say with Sagittarius that the symbol of the Archer pulling the bow back, it means that they are looking far into the future, or a far distance away, so these people often are...love to travel, and love foreign cultures, and they#39;re very philosophical. Capricorn, this is the Goat, the mountain goat—highly, highly ambitious. They wanna climb the mountain, all right. You get the idea here. It#39;s an earth sign. They#39;re very practical, really organized. And they usually do very well in business and with any kind of structure because they are ruled by Saturn. When we get to Aquarius, this is this friendship sign. It#39;s also the Water Bearer and carrying of liquids, but it#39;s the most friendly, social sign of all, very strong with humanitarians. They love to be around groups of people, and they often make great doctors. When we get to Pisces, we#39;re talking about another dual sign, the fish swimming into different directions. So, Pisces is often a very sensitive, very mystical, and very misunderstood sign. Okay. They#39;re highly sympathetic. And as I said before, this is a sign that kind of goes with the flow. It#39;s a water sign. And those are the 12 signs of the zodiac, and a little about them. Article/201508/393702

There is a misconception about chameleons that they change their color in order to blend in with their environment. That is actually not the case. When a chameleon is calm it is green and so it naturally blends in with its leafy surroundings. But male chameleons change color when they become excited in the presence of a female or a rival male,as shown here. I will put the first frame in the bottom right for comparison. As you can see,as he becomes more excited.his color changes to be more yellow orange and red.So instead of blending in this chameleon will now stand out.But how do chameleons actually change their color? For years we thought that there was a simple well-established mechanism for this color change. In their skin, chameleons have different cells containing colored pigments. Some are yellow others are red and some contain the dark melanin pigment. Many animals including chameleons are known to turn a darker shade by causing the melanin to sp out along the fingery extensions of the cell. They turn lighter again by condensing the pigment back into one spot. It was assumed that chameleons must turn yellow, orange and red in the same way,by causing those pigments to sp out in those cells. But new research from collaborating groups of physicist and biologists at the University of Geneva shows that this is incorrect. Now the first clue should come from the fact that there is actually no green pigment in the a chameleon. The green color actually created by two distinct mechanisms, pigment color and structural color. Beneath the yellow pigment cells, there are cells containing tiny 130 nm crystals regularly arranged in a lattice. Now light diffracts off these crystals and due to the spacing between them, blue light constructively interferes and is therefore strongly reflected.Whereas the other colors are not reflected. This is very similar to how a morpho butterfly wing creates an iridescent blue. There is no blue pigment just the periodic nanoscale structure that acts as a strong reflector for only one color. So a chameleon looks green due to the combination of the yellow light from the pigment plus the blue light reflected off the crystal structure beneath it.So how do chameleons change this green into yellow orange and red?Well previously it was assumed that the color change was achieved by dispersing pigments in the colored cells. But now scientists have found it#39;s actually the crystals underneath which are changing.By increasing the spacing between the crystals the chameleons can change which color is selectively reflected.Bigger gaps between the crystals are better at reflecting longer wavelengths. So as the spacing increases, the color changes from blue to green to yellow, and then orange and red. Scientists compared skin samples from calm green chameleons and excited yellow chameleons and found that indeed,in the excited chameleon the crystal spacing was much further apart. Here you can see a single cell enlarged and the color it reflects changing from blue to green to yellow, orange and red. Plus,a computer simulation of the light reflected off crystals while their spacing is decreasing also provides excellent agreement with these observations.Furthermore, applying physical pressure to the skin causes the crystals to compress and so they reflect more blue. When that pressure is removed, the crystals expand again reflecting more green light. The structure of a chameleon#39;s skin gets even more fascinating,as there is another layer of cells underneath which also contain crystals. But these crystals are larger more spaced out and more disorganized. This means they reflect longer wavelengths in the infrared part of the spectrum and they reflect a broader range of these wavelengths.It#39;s thought that the function of this layer could be to reflect light from the sun since these chameleons live in bright full-sun habitats. So male chameleons don#39;t change their color by sping out red and yellow pigment.Instead they do something much more remarkable. They actively tune the spacing between nanoscale crystals in order to create structural colors that span the whole length of the visible spectrum. Now what I find amazing is that in this day and age we thought we had the answer to how chameleons change color, but it actually took the combined expertise of physicists and biologists working together to figure out what#39;s really going on. Article/201505/371929。

The reason we care about angular momentum is that if you take a bunch of objects that are interacting electromagnetically or gravitationally or whatever, and add up all of their angular momenta into one number, then that total value won#39;t change over time(unless some other objects from outside come in and mess things up). So as another example, the earth, which is 150 million kilometers from the sun, orbits at 30 km/s and has a mass of 6*10^24 kilograms, has an angular momentum of 2.7*10^40 kilogram meters squared per second.That#39;s four thousand quintillion quintillion bicycle wheels! And this angular momentum stays roughly constant over the course of the earth#39;s orbit year in and year out.But what#39;s amazing is that even if the sun and the rest of the solar system were to suddenly disappear, the earth would STILL have that some angular momentum about the point where the sun WAS. Without the sun#39;s gravity, the earth would of course now move in a straight line, requiring an ever-larger imaginary circle as it got farther from the point where the sun used to be.But as the earth continued through space, its 30km/s velocity would also point less and less along the circle. so when you calculated the angular momentum, the decrease in velocity would exactly cancel out the increase in the size of the circle, and you#39;d always get the same answer.2.7*10^40 kilogram meters squared per second. So even when nothing is rotating at all, angular momentum is still conserved. And that#39;s the beauty of a law of physics:-it works even when you try to break it! Article/201504/371194At the southern end of the earth,在地球的最南端after four months of total darkness, the sun once more rises over Antarctica. Now at last the Emperor penguins abandon their huddle. The males are still carrying the precious eggs雄企鹅们仍然看护着它们的宝贝that they#39;ve cherished throughout the Antarctic winter. With the returning sun the eggs hatch. Other birds have not even arrived. But the Emperors by enduring the long black winter have given their chicks a head start. These youngsters are now y and eager to make the most of the brief Antarctic summer.

Hi, I am expert communication trainer, Dan O#39;Connor. And this week I#39;m going to give you three magic phrases that you can use to instantly boost your confidence when you need to present an idea, make a request, and so much more. You know, many of us, when we walk into what we know is going to be, maybe a challenging communication situation, we lack confidence, because we simply do not have the tools. And this week, what I am going to give you are three magic phrases as I said, and these are going to be what we call ;navigational phrases.;嗨,我是专业沟通训练师, Dan O#39;Connor。 Navigational phrases—you use when it seems as though your message might be going off track to help steer you back on track. We all know that some of us communicate with people who intentionally try to throw our message off track. And when that happens to you the next time, these three magic navigational phrases will be exactly what will get you out of that pickle. They are... Are you y? Magic phrase number one, ;That may be but...; Repeat that, ;That may be but...; Magic phrase number two, ;I understand, however...; Repeat that, ;I understand, however...; And magic phrase number three, ;I see your point, and...; Repeat that, ;I see your point, and...; The way we use this is we couple them with the broken record, and remember that the broken record is different from simply repeating yourself. That might be what some novice communicators do, but not a savvy, polished communicator such as yourself. The broken record is I#39;m going to repeat the exact same word that I used a moment ago, because that sends a very clear signal to the person to whom you#39;re speaking that you are a professional, polished, powerful communicator. And the way we would use these particular magic phrases is like this: for example, let#39;s say that you talk to the scheduler at work, and you say to the scheduler... Now I#39;m saying scheduler rather than boss because I would wanna do a cost-benefit analysis before I might use any communication strategy with my boss.“跳针”是我会重复和我前一刻用过的完全相同的字,因为那会向你正在交谈的人,传递出你是一个专业、文雅、有力的沟通者这样一种非常清楚的信号。 But let#39;s say that I#39;m just speaking to the scheduler, and I say, ; Hi, Susan, I#39;d like to request the last week in May off for personal business.; And she would have said to me, ;You just had a week off in January.; Remember, use one of your navigational magic phrases. ;That may be but I#39;d like to request the last week off in May for personal business.; And she might say, ;Asking a lot of time off these days, aren#39;t you?; And I can simply respond, keeping my cool and confidence, by again using that magic navigational phrase, ;That may be but I#39;d like to request the last week off in May for personal business.;但假使说我只是在和专员说话,而我说:“嗨,Susan,因为私人事务,我想要请五月最后一星期的假。” And saying things like that three times in a row again sends a very clear message to the person that you are communicating with that, ;Don#39;t test me. I#39;m not one of your rude communicators. I am polished, professional, and prepared.; So we can use this in a variety of circumstances. Let#39;s say that you#39;re presenting an idea, and somebody tries to throw you off track. Somebody throws a car in the wheels of your presentation, and says something like, ;We tried that idea once aly.; Remember ;that may be but; and then keep going with what you say. The savvy, polished communicator is not easily knocked off message, and with those three magic phrases, you can navigate back on horse and stay on the message. ;Daniel did what Rumpole at the Old Bailey would do if he thought he was cross-examining witnesses who were telling lies. One has to say that in real life Daniel would have been extremely lucky to have been thought to have demolished the witnesses, and to demonstrate their dishonesty by asking them one question each, but the principle is quite clear, and Daniel was clearly a very skilful cross-examiner.;但以理的做法与“老贝利律师”鲁波尔一样,如果觉得目击人在说谎,就要进行盘问。 Each scene on the crystal is a masterpiece of miniature carving, and in every scene, the artist has still found space for a small text in Latin, explaining what is going on. In the final scene is the ringing phrase, ;Et salvatus est sanguis innoxius in die illa; - ;And that day, innocent blood was saved;. The king who commissioned the Susannah Crystal was descended from one of the great figures of medieval Europe - Charlemagne. Around 800, Charlemagne, King of the Franks, had created an empire that covered most of western Europe, including northern Italy, western Germany and modern France. This was the largest state that western Europe had seen since the disintegration of the Roman Empire, and the stability and prosperity of Charlemagne#39;s empire allowed a great flourishing of the arts in the years after 800. Our crystal is a magnificent example of this so-called Carolingian Renaissance. This is a jewel that has always been valued and, for most of its existence, it was in the abbey of Waulsort in modern Belgium, in the centre of Charlemagne#39;s empire. It was certainly there in the twelfth century, when the abbey#39;s chronicle clearly describes it. Article/201511/408961
