You will see them across the city tonight, whatever city you happen to be in. They will stand out for their tightly clenched jaws, their sullen silences and general air of shiftiness. These are the men who have been dragged by their partners to see Fifty Shades of Grey at the cinema.2015年2月14日的晚上,无论你身处哪座城市,都会看到这样一群人在城市里穿行。 There they will sit, beacons of submerged testosterone in a largely female world, present mainly because they have calculated that they are, at least, on a promise; this not being the kind of film to which a woman takes her partner if sex is absolutely not on the agenda. True, after gazing lustfully on the fab abs of Jamie Dornan, their own partners’ more fleshy features may seem a step down but are they really going to start looking for an alternative at 11pm on a Clapham Saturday? At some point it might occur to the men that in being made to watch the bondage bonkbuster, they have in effect been tied to their seat and forced to submit to the sexual fantasies of their wives or girlfriends. They may, like Anastasia, have worked out that sex was in the air, but they did not anticipate the “red room” — a darkened chamber where deviant fantasies are played out to the soundtrack of munched popcorn and the slurping of Diet Coke. No doubt Christian Grey would have had them sign a contract in advance promising never to reveal what happened inside the secret chambers of the Vue North Finchley or the Odeon Sheffield. In this case, it won’t be necessary. Few will want to talk about it. Maybe it will cross the minds of the more sensitive men that they are facing karmic revenge, experiencing how women feel most weeks of the year at the cinema as their partners drag them to Basic Instinct,Showgirls, American Pie or 9#189; Weeks. The women I know tell me they are not convinced Jamie Dornan is right for the part, feeling he does not quite scale the heights of their vision of the perfect male. Personally, I find this quite encouraging since Dornan and I are not that alike, but it is the kind of remark that could dent the self-esteem of a less confident man. As it happens, Dornan and I do have similarly sculpted six-packs; I just keep mine under a protective layer. Should the Fifty Shades frenzy ever catch on in my own household, I could, I suppose, plan a secret red room of my own. But when the time came to furnish it, I’d end up eschewing all the erotica and opting for a La-Z-Boy recliner, a huge TV and a hotline to Papa John’s pizzeria. It may not be romantic but there’s a lot less chafing. I dare say there will be plenty of girls’ nights out on offer for those let down by their partners or attracted by a night of whooping and slavering. Yet for all the discomfort felt by men attending the movie, my hunch is that ushering your partner into the clutches of a hen party is the more dangerous position. For unless you are supremely good-looking, damn rich and a demon in bed, there seems little chance of your partner returning from her ladies’ night pondering whether she might just have sold herself short. So it might make more sense for a man to attend. In the first place, he can spend time subtly pointing out the downsides of the film, the lack of screen chemistry and the general soullessness of the ho-hum billionaire lifestyle. Second, he may be able to remind his partner of her good fortune in snagging a boyfriend who, though short of a helicopter, can hold down a relationship without resorting to spanking paddles. And finally, his mere presence inserts him into his partner’s fantasy film night so that, who knows, she may even ascribe some of Grey’s better traits to him. So for any man caught in this paradox, I make the following suggestions. Embrace the Fifty Shades; turn it into a Valentine’s weekend extravaganza; dress up; hire a limo; book a fancy restaurant; be the fantasy date. And when you get home, don’t forget the blindfold. After two hours of gazing at Christian Grey, she may not be y for reality just yet. /201503/3620021. You might have too many shoes yet not enough handbags Shoes cannot last long, especially if they are comfortable and you tend to wear the same pair very often. You can always buy similar shoes for a lower price. It’s a different story with handbags, though. Bags do not wear out quickly. If you pay money for a good bag, be sure that you invest in something worthy. If you have to choose, opt for an expensive bag instead of expensive shoes。 /201507/384124;I just got promoted again.It#39;s easy to succeed if everyone likes you!;我又升迁了。 /201507/385527For the Taiwanese chef Lanshu Chen, cooking is only part of the job. The chef, who worked at high-profile restaurants like the French Laundry in Napa Valley, owns Le Mo#251;t Restaurant in Taichung City, Taiwan, a member of the Relais amp; Ch#226;teaux group. In early March, Ms. Chen, 34, was in Carmel-by-the Sea, Calif., for Relais amp; Ch#226;teaux’s GourmetFest, featuring more than 20 well-known chefs. Following are edited excerpts from a conversation with Ms. Chen. Q. How much are you on the road for work? I take a dozen or so trips a year, but they’re usually short — between two and three days — because I’m always in a rush to get back to cooking at Le Mo#251;t. GourmetFest is one of many annual global food festivals. What do you think these festivals mean for both the participating chefs and attendees? As a chef, it is truly enjoyable and inspiring to have a chance to exchange ideas and to celebrate with other chefs. And for the people who come to the festivals, you’re not limited to trying one style of cooking, and you get a sense of different chefs’ perceptions of foods and their personal cultures. While female chefs like yourself have certainly become more visible in the food world in recent years, they still seem to lag behind their male counterparts. Why do you think that is? 你觉得原因是什么?I think it is simply because there haven’t been enough female chefs, which dates back to old societal norms of what roles are acceptable for women. But I do think that is slowly changing, and there are more of us committing ourselves professionally to this field. You have international training, but you chose to go home to open your own restaurant in 2008. Why? 这是为什么?I had been thinking about having my own place for a while and thought that Taiwan is where it should be because the concept of what I wanted to do — a fine-dining contemporary French spot with subtle Taiwanese influences — didn’t really exist in the country. Is that how you would describe the food at Le Mo#251;t? Yes. It’s a balance of my roots and my training abroad, and I use a lot of local fruits and vegetables that are harder to find elsewhere. One example is turnips. I use preserved turnips, which are very salty, to add in a touch of saltiness into sauces, or I’ll make turnip carpaccio and serve it with an egg yolk. When you travel, what kinds of culinary experiences do you look for, and what advice do you have for travelers who want to stay away from generic and touristy places on the road? 对那些想远离拥挤的普通景点的游客,你有什么建议?I like a mix of food experiences and encourage the same for anyone else. Visiting a new place is not just about dining at the big-name restaurants. I do that, of course, but I like to let the chefs of these fancier places show me their favorites in town. And I’m a fan of street food, especially in Asia where there is such a strong tradition of it, so I definitely get a taste of this side of a city as well. What has been your most memorable meal so far? The four-hour dinner I had three years ago at Ultraviolet in Shanghai, which is run by the French chef Paul Pairet. The restaurant hosts only 10 diners a night, and the meal engages all the senses. When I was served a dish with mushrooms and truffles, it came covered in a black lid and was emanating smoke, and the air smelled of soil and fog. Also, there are projectors which display images on the wall to correspond with the dishes you’re eating, and this one was of the forest. You literally felt like you were in the forest. As a chef, eating well must be a priority for you. Is there any food from home you make sure to take with you when you’re on the road? Tea is very important to me because it brings me calm and relaxation, so I always travel with loose black and oolong tea and enjoy it in my hotel room. If I have space, I even bring a teapot and cups. /201504/368022

Here is a test. Find a pencil and a scrap of paper and draw the Apple logo. Easy, no? Now compare your sketch to the real thing. If you are like me, or like 98.8 per cent of a sample recently tested by psychologists at UCLA, you failed. Almost everyone either puts the bite on the wrong side, draws two leaves instead of one, or in some other way bungles the simple job of reproducing an image we have all seen thousands of times. Not only are we unable to sketch one of the most famous logos on earth, most of us cannot even pick out the real thing when we see it in an identity parade of lookalikes. Why is this? The researchers talk of “attentional saturation” and “inattentional amnesia”, but I think it is simpler than that. We cannot recall it because we do not have to. For me, the Apple logo falls into a large collection of things that I do not need to remember. Increasingly, practically everything belongs in this category. At home there are a few things I still need to remember, such as buying more shampoo when we have run out and filling out a form for my son’s school trip. But at work I can safely forget almost everything — apart from one big thing and one little thing. Otherwise the slate can be wiped clean. Workplace memory has been entirely outsourced to the computer. In theory, this means remembering my computer password, though in fact the help desk has often bailed me out when I’ve forgotten it. There is no need to remember any facts thanks to Google, all appointments are now online, and everything anyone ever said is easily found on an email somewhere. A possible exception is corporate memory, which tends to be stored in heads rather than on clouds, but few corporations show much demand for that any more. Today’s decision makers do not welcome protestations from old geezers who can remember that such and such was tried before and didn’t work. Yesterday is an irritant. So what are the two things we do need to remember at work? The small thing is the location of one’s vending cards/security passes. I try to make this easier by wearing mine on a string around my neck, although even this is not a complete solution as I sometimes take the card off the string, forget to put it back and then have to hunt around for it. The big thing is recognising other people. Clearly, it is an advantage if you can remember someone’s name but, as failing to do so is commonplace, the penalty is fairly small. The vital thing is remembering faces and incidental detail about them. I recently went to see Still Alice , the film in which Julianne Moore plays an academic with early onset Alzheimer’s. When she forgets a word in a lecture it is briefly embarrassing, but she makes a joke and recovers quickly. Getting lost on a run is worse, but the real horror is when she can’t remember her son’s girlfriend, having just been introduced to her 15 minutes earlier. You don’t need to have Alzheimer’s to forget a face, and when you do so at work it matters. Recently I met a man at a corporate event who had been at university with me and seemed to know a great deal about my life. Having no recollection of him at all put me at such a disadvantage that when he asked me to do him a favour I was wrongfooted into saying yes. Equally, not long ago I ran into a senior executive with whom I had had an hour’s meeting five or six years ago. When I greeted him warmly he stared back blankly, evidently confident that we had never met. Possibly this meant nothing more than that his memory was poor, but I took it personally — as one inevitably does. Either I had aged so badly in five years that I was unrecognisable, I reasoned, or I had been too dull to remember. Neither one good. The ability to remember people strikes me as a bigger asset than emotional intelligence at work. Most of us don’t especially want empathy in the office, but everyone wants to be remembered. The more someone is able to recall chapter and verse of all small talk exchanged at previous meetings, the more you are inclined to like and trust them. It is not just a skill for politicians: it’s for everyone. One day, probably very soon, wearable technology will do the job for us by recognising faces and connecting them to a database of trivia. But by then it will be worthless. The reason we want people to remember us is because it is so hard to do so. If the computer does the remembering, the value of it becomes zero. No one wants to be remembered per se. We want to be remembered because it is a sign that another human being sees us as a valued individual, not just another interchangeable employee. /201504/370432
