Such lyricism inspired the Padilla 1968 Golden Bear cigar, an earthy-flavored tribute to the poet. It’s called the 1968 Series because that’s the year Mr. Padilla published the anthology “Fuera del Juego” (“Out of the Game”), which ultimately got him locked up for “having plotted against the powers of the state.” Cigar novices might mistake this hard-to-find cigar band’s red and gold illustration for a crown, but aficionados know it’s actually the nib of the poet’s fountain pen. Cigar nostalgia abounds in Cuba, and I encountered few more eager to share it than Michael Phillips, a Briton who moved to Havana some 25 years ago to teach English. He is a devoted member of the city’s Cigar Aficionado Club, whose members — foreign diplomats and businessmen — meet monthly for dinner, cigars and conversation. Sitting in the spacious living room of his apartment in the upscale Miramar neighborhood, where most of the city’s top government officials reside, Mr. Phillips poured Cognac and held out a tray of unbanded cigars, from short coronas to lengthier Churchills, tan Habanos to darker Maduros. He grinned at my selection, pyramid-shaped and walnut in color. “Don’t ask me where it came from,” he said mischievously, “because I cannot tell you.”“别问我这是从哪儿来的,”他调皮地说,“因为我不能告诉你。”After some prodding, Mr. Phillips explained his suspiciously bandless cigar : “The rollers in the factory have a a, but many of the women find a way to sneak a few extras out. So they roll for eight hours in the factory, and then come home and roll for another two hours.” He lit up, drew from his cigar, and watched the plume rise. “There was one girl who worked at the Romeo y Julieta factory; she was pregnant for three years!” He chuckled at such clever smuggling. “But yes, these are as good as the ones from the factory.” Cigar enthusiasts are a discriminating bunch, yet most agree that Cuba is blessed with a unique combination of sun, soil and moisture — coupled with a rich history of hand-rolling — that makes for the world’s most flavorful cigars, Mr. Phillips said. If there was a dark period, it occurred during the Communist revolution as some of Cuba’s most talented growers fled and set up operations in countries such as the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Honduras and Nicaragua. While an infusion of Soviet cash helped to prop up Cuba’s cigar industry, competition over the next several decades from its new foreign rivals — along with some bad crop years and a dismal foray into tobacco hybridization — diminished its product. The complaints, ranging from poor flavor to shoddy construction, dragged Cuban cigars down in Cigar Aficionado magazine’s vaunted annual rankings. From 1998 to 2005, Cuban cigars never scored above an average 88 on a 100-point scale, compared with its typical 90-plus average in years beforehand. Such history is always surfacing here, a collision of old glory and modern reality that infuses even its architecture. On Tenerife Street in central Havana, for instance, is a former factory that was once a major production house and storage facility for cigars. Decades ago, the owners fled and passed the building down to remaining family members. A few years ago, though, city officials took note that there was, once again, a family living in the factory, and have since taken over the rest of it and renovated it with apartments. Former factory workers, who once lived in poor conditions, now reside free of charge in modern living quarters. In Cuba, those smoking the finest cigars tend to be visitors like me, expats like Mr. Phillips, senior government officials and international business people. Most Cubans living on a state salary of less than a month can’t afford hand-rolled cigars of export quality. Cubans do smoke local cigars, but they are not good quality and cost about a nickel in American currency and can be fodder for swindling undiscerning tourists. /201601/419668High blood pressure is one of the main causes of heart disease, stroke and premature death in Europe and North America, with about one in three adults afflicted by the condition. There are 152,000 strokes in the UK alone each year, resulting in 41,000 deaths, according to the National Health Service, yet an estimated 30 per cent of people who have high blood pressure don’t even know they have a problem. Under current guidelines in Europe, people are considered to have high blood pressure, known medically as hypertension, if their systolic blood pressure, the first of two numbers usually recorded, is above 140mm Hg, or millimetres of mercury. But a study released in the US last month may force doctors to rethink their approach to the problem. The National Institutes of Health study, known as the systolic blood pressure intervention trial (Sprint), followed 9,300 people who were over the age of 50. The trial found that people given medication to lower their blood pressure to 120mm Hg, or 20mm Hg below the previous target, suffered a third fewer heart attacks, heart failure and strokes than control groups. The risk of death declined by a quarter. The study was so successful that it was ended a year earlier than planned. The problem is that in order to reach these reduced levels, patients were given a cocktail of three medications. When I asked Paul Thompson, a cardiologist in Hartford, Connecticut, if he has changed his treatment for hypertension as a result, he says “not really”. The main reason, he notes, is the difficulty in getting patients to adhere to such a complicated drug regimen. “We always have to remember that folks in studies are different from folks in the office,” Dr Thompson says.“我们始终必须记住,研究对象跟办公室里的人是不同的,”汤普森说。When I ask the same question of Rhian Touyz, the director of the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Science at the University of Glasgow, she says she is awaiting the full results of the Sprint study, which will be formally presented at a conference in Florida next month, before making any change in recommendations in medications. However, Professor Touyz does note that lifestyle changes are the first line of defence against hypertension. One of the biggest contributors to high blood pressure is the large amount of salt in western diets, not only what we add from the shaker but what is hidden in prepackaged foods and beverages such as breakfast cereals and sports drinks. It has been known for 50 years that people who eat a low salt diet (under 2g a day) are free from the blood pressure problems common in western industrial countries. The NHS recommends eating no more than 6g of salt, or 2.4g of sodium a day.NHS建议,每日盐摄入量不要超过6克,也就是说,钠摄入量不超过2.4克。Prof Touyz says that cutting salt intake is only one of several lifestyle changes she recommends. The others include exercising four times a week for 30-40 minutes, cutting alcohol consumption and eating a diet high in fruit and vegetables. So get your blood pressure checked. For those who have high blood pressure, it would help to increase consumption of kale, spinach, beets and beetroot juice, which are rich in nitrates. The nitrates become nitric oxide in the body, which is a natural dilator of blood vessels, significantly lowering blood pressure. /201510/405252

To many, Disney is synonymous with innocent morality stories and fluffy rodents singing songs of hope and joy. This is an image Disney has worked hard to perpetuate in their films, but many of the supposedly innocent messages, on closer examination, can be revealed as otherwise. There is no doubt that Disney movies have brought happiness to millions, if not billions of children around the world. In this list, however, I have examined some of the more harrowing themes present in Disney movies, which may have affected you and your children more than you know. 10.Historical Inaccuracies10. Perhaps one of the most obvious points critics have grilled Disney over are historical inaccuracies in their few films which are actually based on real events. ;Pocahontas; has been dubbed a travesty on the history of the Native American genocide. The title character is portrayed as a native woman who falls in love with settler John Smith, but in reality Pocahontas was only 10 at the time. Smith did befriend the girl but there was no romance. An even worse travesty is the film#39;s end. The settlers become friends with the natives and everyone lives happily ever after. Really Disney? In fact, 90% of the indigenous people in America were wiped out by a combination of disease and genocide of crazed religious settlers, believing their actions justified by the idea of ;manifest destiny;. Those who survived were subjected to poor living conditions and servitude to the land-grabbing Europeans, who subsequently became Americans. 9.Extreme Thinness9. The size-zero look is replicated by every single Disney princess in cinema, with the exception of Snow White, perhaps because in the 1930s ideals of beauty were different from now. It#39;s not just that women are portrayed as slender to increase their attractiveness; the level of exaggeration (for example in the impossibly lean waist of Megara from ;Hercules;) is staggering to the point absurdity. Many critics, particularly feminists, have blasted Disney over this portrayal of women, claiming that the images have inspired anorexia and eating disorders in young women.#8232;每一个迪士尼电影中的公主形象都是又瘦又小,只有白雪公主是个例外,也许是因为20世纪30年代的审美观点与现在截然不同吧。 8.Subliminal Messaging8. Disney has a track record of slipping bizarre messages into their films, mostly in the form of hidden images, but also sometimes through sound. For those who don#39;t know, subliminal messaging refers to images or sounds that pass by so fast that only your subconscious picks them up. The most notable case was announced by Disney itself on a home copy of ;The Rescuers;; as two mice ride in a sardine tin, a photograph of a topless woman can be seen in a window for several frames. Disney were quick to lay the blame on editors for planting the image as a joke (of course), and recalled all copies of the film. 7.Sexual Harassment is Acceptable7. A recurring theme for Disney princess films involves a beautiful woman being awakened by an unapproved kiss on the lips (though I guess this is slightly better than the rape found in the original Sleeping Beauty). Although it is arguable that some people wouldn#39;t mind being woken by the kiss of an impossibly handsome and wealthy prince, most women tend to reject this idea. In both Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, however, the women tend not to take the harassment too badly; in fact both characters marry these potential rapists after their respective rude awakenings. 6.Importance of Social Status6. Disney heroes and villains are almost always high in the social hierarchy when compared to others. The plot structure of ;Cinderella; revolves around a woman who manages to escape her terrible living conditions simply by marrying a wealthy man. Her success is down to her attractiveness in comparison to her hideous stepsisters. This sense of entitlement amongst central characters is consistent in almost every Disney film. So-called ;Prince Charming; characters are so valued for their wealth and power that they can get away with basically anything. Imagine a reversal of the roles: replace Prince Phillip from ;Sleeping Beauty; with Philoctetes, a minor socially-inferior character from ;Hercules;. I wager most women would wake up to a kiss from Philoctetes screaming ;Rape!; at the top of their voices, rather than ;Let#39;s get married!;在迪士尼电影中,英雄们的社会地位总是比坏蛋们要高。

As the giraffe and elephant watch in horror, they look at him and ask, ;Lion, why did you do this? He was merely trying to help us all!;狮子看看小白兔,放下手中的针筒,把小白兔猛揍了一顿。 它只是想要帮助我们大家啊!”The lion answers, ;He makes me run around the forest like an idiot each time he#39;s on ecstasy!;狮子回答:“这家伙每次嗑了摇头丸就拉着我像白痴一样在森林里乱跑!” /201512/413732

BEIJING — Glaciologists in China and elsewhere have said for years that climate change is the main cause of glacier erosion, which threatens the water sources of much of humanity. Officials in the far northwestern Chinese region of Xinjiang now say another factor is putting the fragile glaciers at risk: tourism. The Xinjiang government announced this month that it was banning tourism on glaciers across the region, which is one-sixth of the Chinese land mass. Many glaciers are found in Xinjiang, and in the Tianshan range in particular, which runs east-west through the middle of the vast region. Officials want to ensure that tourists observe the glaciers from a distance, not atop the glaciers themselves, according to a report published on Thursday by Xinhua, the state news agency. The report said that, over the last 50 years, the average temperature in Xinjiang had risen 0.33 to 0.39 degrees Celsius a decade, or about 0.6 to 0.7 degrees Fahrenheit, nearly three times the global average. China has 46,377 glaciers, and about 47 percent of the national ice reserves are in Xinjiang, a rugged region of deserts, forests and soaring mountains that shares borders with more than half a dozen countries. The report said that “global warming, grazing, mining and tourism have accelerated destruction of the glaciers, and led to water shortages in several areas.” It ed Chen Xi of the Chinese Academy of Sciences as saying that glaciers in the Tianshan range have receded 15 to 30 percent in the last three decades. 30%。Scientists say the main cause of climate change is greenhouse gas emissions, mostly from industrial coal use. China emits more greenhouse gases — carbon dioxide being the primary one — than any other country. The ed States is second in emissions. The growth in China’s coal use has slowed as the national economy cools, but climate researchers here expect emissions to continue rising until sometime between 2025 and 2030. Glaciologists have observed glaciers in retreat across western China. In Gansu Province, the Mengke Glacier, the largest valley glacier in the Qilian range, and two others have been retreating at an accelerating rate since the 1990s, according to a report by a local research center. That rate tripled from the 1990s to the 2000s, the report said. That has resulted in floods in recent years. In the long term, it said, there will be water shortages across the region. Provincial and regional governments outside Xinjiang have not announced bans on glacier tourism. In Gansu, such tourism in the Qilian range is popular. The July 1st Glacier, about 55 miles southwest of Jiayuguan, site of the western end of the Great Wall, draws many people each year. In Sichuan Province, tourists flock to Hailuogou National Glacier Forest Park, and Yunnan Province has the popular Mingyong Glacier. Officials in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, banned tourism to No. 1 Glacier near the city in 2006. But in recent years, tourists have gotten rides to the glacier with local herders looking to make money. A Xinhua reporter who visited the glacier in July described seeing tourists there taking photos and littering. The Xinhua article from Thursday ed Li Jidong, a Xinjiang tourism official, saying that glacier tourism in the region brought in less than one billion renminbi, or 3 million, over the last dozen years. “The loss from shrinking glaciers,” Mr. Li said, “is incalculable.”“但是冰川崩塌、消融带来的损失是不可估算的,”李冀东说。 /201602/427026

1.The Origins of Halloween万圣节的起源Halloween is thought to have originated around 4000 B.C., which means Halloween has been around for over 6,000 years as we know it today, borrow traditions from different festivals namely: the Roman feralia festival commemorating for dead, the roman Pomona festival honoring the goddess of fruit and trees, the Celtic festival Samuin, meaning ;summer#39;s end;, which comprise the bulk of origins of Halloween traditions, the Catholic Hallowmas period of ;All soul#39;s Day; and All Saint#39;s Day which was instigated around 800 by a church to try to replace Samuin. Black and orange are the international colors of Halloween. Black, of course, is a sign of death, gloom and the foreboding night, which are all associated with Halloween. Orange is a traditional emblem of fortitude, survival and power, which signify the harvest, and the colors of fall. Halloween is where death (winter) takes over from the life-giving fall harvest, hence the mixtures of black and orange come festival time. The custom of wearing costumes or masks comes from Celtic tradition of young men impersonating evil spirits, by dressing up in white costumes with blackened faces or masks in an attempt to placate these spirit. Trick or Treating has a short history. In 19th century Scotland and Ireland, there is some records of children travelling door-to-door praying for souls or performing for money or cakes on All Hallows Eve. However, the tradition is a short step from the medieval practice of souling, in which beggars went door to door on October 31 to pray for souls in return for food. The food given was often a Soul Cake, which was a small round cake which represented a soul being freed from Purgatory when the cake was eaten. Today Trick or Treat means ;gives us a treat or we#39;ll pull a prank on you;.;不给糖,就捣蛋;历史较短。 According to Irish legend, Jack O#39;Lanterns are named after a man named Jack. This crafty fellow fooled the devil on numerous occasions and, as a result, his soul was condemned to hang about Earth for all eternity. Jack, barred from both heaven and hell, put the burning ember given to him by Beelzebub into the very first ;jack-o-lantern;, in order to ward off any more encounters with the Evil one. 6.Turnips Instead of Pumpkins萝卜还是南瓜The first Jack O#39;Lanterns were actually made from turnips by the Celts to ward off evil spirits during Samuin, The Celts would hollow out turnips then carve faces in them and place candles inside. The turnips were then either placed in the windows to keep evil spirits from encountering a home or carried around as lanterns. The tradition eventually melded with the North American tradition of carving pumpkins. /201510/406909From Princess Diana#39;s meringue to Kate Middleton#39;s elegant lace number, everyone has their ideal wedding dress. So it is no surprise that a charting 100 years of bridal fashion has sparked admiration and disgust in equal measure. The clip filmed by Mode.com, shows model Lolly Howie trying on an array of gowns dating from 1915 to 2015, to demonstrate just how fashion comes full circle. The 1915 one, with its long veil, high sheer neck and short sleeves, is not too dissimilar from the modern lacy number.1915年的那款礼设计有长面纱、透明高领和短袖,跟现代蕾丝礼差不多。In between the hem lines get shorter, and then dramatically longer, and the veils appear and disappear, until it culminates in the truly hideous train and puff ball sleeves of the 1985 offering. On the way, there is the elegant dropped waist of the 1925 dress that could have been worn by a flapper, while the 1975 number breathes hippy chick. The has been watched more than 3,780,000 times on YouTube with people arguing about which decade is best. But the message of the is one that everyone can agree on - Love is never out of fashion. But which would you wear to your special day? /201510/402127
