Halloween is an annual celebration, but just what is it actually a celebration of? And how did this peculiar custom originate? Is it, as some claim, a kind of demon worship? Or is it just a harmless vestige of some ancient pagan ritual? The word itself, Halloween, actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. November 1, All Hollows Day (or All Saints Day), is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints. But, in the 5th century , in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en), the Celtic New year. One story says that, on that day, the disembodied spirits of all those who had died throughout the preceding year would come back in search of living bodies to possess for the next year. It was believed to be their only hope for the afterlife. The Celts believed all laws of space and time were suspended during this time, allowing the spirit world to intermingle with the living. Naturally, the still-living did not want to be possessed. So on the night of October 31, villagers would extinguish the fires in their homes, to make them cold and undesirable. They would then dress up in all manner of ghoulish costumes and noisily paraded around the neighborhood, being as destructive as possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for bodies to possess. Probably a better explanation of why the Celts extinguished their fires was not to discourage spirit possession, but so that all the Celtic tribes could relight their fires from a common source, the Druidic fire that was kept burning in the Middle of Ireland, at Usinach. Some accounts tell of how the Celts would burn someone at the stake who was thought to have aly been possessed, as sort of a lesson to the spirits. Other accounts of Celtic history debunk these stories as myth. The Romans adopted the Celtic practices as their own. But in the first century AD, Samhain was assimilated into celebrations of some of the other Roman traditions that took place in October, such as their day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple, which might explain the origin of our modern tradition of bobbing for apples on Halloween. The thrust of the practices also changed over time to become more ritualized. As belief in spirit possession waned, the practice of dressing up like hobgoblins, ghosts, and witches took on a more ceremonial role. The custom of Halloween was brought to America in the 1840's by Irish immigrants fleeing their country's potato famine. At that time, the favorite pranks in New England included tipping over outhouses and unhinging fence gates. The custom of trick-or-treating is thought to have originated not with the Irish Celts, but with a ninth-century European custom called souling. On November 2, All Souls Day, early Christians would walk from village to village begging for soul cakes, made out of square pieces of b with currants. The more soul cakes the beggars would receive, the more prayers they would promise to say on behalf of the dead relatives of the donors. At the time, it was believed that the dead remained in limbo for a time after death, and that prayer, even by strangers, could expedite a soul's passage to heaven. The Jack-o-lantern custom probably comes from Irish folklore. As the tale is told, a man named Jack, who was notorious as a drunkard and trickster, tricked Satan into climbing a tree. Jack then carved an image of a cross in the tree's trunk, trapping the devil up the tree. Jack made a deal with the devil that, if he would never tempt him again, he would promise to let him down the tree. According to the folk tale, after Jack died, he was denied entrance to Heaven because of his evil ways, but he was also denied access to Hell because he had tricked the devil. Instead, the devil gave him a single ember to light his way through the frigid darkness. The ember was placed inside a hollowed-out turnip to keep it glowing longer. The Irish used turnips as their Jack's lanterns originally. But when the immigrants came to America, they found that pumpkins were far more plentiful than turnips. So the Jack-O-Lantern in America was a hollowed-out pumpkin, lit with an ember. So, although some cults may have adopted Halloween as their favorite holiday, the day itself did not grow out of evil practices. It grew out of the rituals of Celts celebrating a new year, and out of Medieval prayer rituals of Europeans. And today, even many churches have Halloween parties or pumpkin carving events for the kids. After all, the day itself is only as evil as one cares to make it. /200804/36479

A senior Apple executive said on Tuesday that the company would return more capital to shareholders if US tax laws were relaxed and played down the likelihood that the company would use its excess cash to create new American manufacturing jobs. The comments by Luca Maestri, Apple’s chief financial officer, could put the company on a collision course with the Trump administration, which hopes to boost US jobs through tax cuts and concessions aimed at getting companies such as the tech group to repatriate cash stranded in overseas accounts. Mr Maestri’s comments came as Apple stock hit another new high. Asked at a Goldman Sachs investor conference in San Francisco what the top priority would be if the tax rate was lowered, allowing the company to repatriate some of its 0bn in overseas funds, the Apple CFO said it would give “additional flexibility around our capital return activities”. Later in the interview, he suggested that it would be difficult for Apple to increase its manufacturing base in the US, which is one of President Donald Trump’s key policies. “Essentially the supply chain for the tech industry is not in the US today,” Mr Maestri said. The Apple executive also rejected the idea of a border adjustment tax, which has also won support from the Trump administration.. “It is very hard for us to imagine that a border tax would be good for the US economy,” Mr Maestri said. “It is a tax that would end up burdening the end consumer. It presupposes as an idea that the dollar would have to appreciate very significantly from where it is today, which is aly too strong.”“我们很难想象边境税会给美国经济带来什么好处,”马埃斯特里说,“它是一项最终会加重终端消费者负担的税。 With a potentially detrimental impact to US competitiveness and jobs, he added, “it doesn’t feel like that would be a positive outcome”. One way for Apple to avoid being hit by such a tax change would be to increase the scale of its US manufacturing. Most of the country's Internetusers go online to chat or seek entertainment rather than look for jobs or conduct business.According to a report released by China InternetNetwork Information (CNNIC) yesterday, China's Internet users totaled 162 million in the first six months of this year. The country reported 137 million users last year. The rapid growth could be translated into almost 100 new users per minute in the past six months. At this rate of increase, China is expected to overtake the ed States, the world's leader, by the end of next year. The US had 211 million Internet users at the end of last month.Although the number of China's Internet users has been on the rise since 1994, when first introduced to the country, the research showed most users were interested in chat rooms and entertainment, and not job searches, education, and e-banking.About 75 percent online news and used search engines for information.More than 60 percent regarded online music and s as an important source of entertainment.Only 21 percent used e-banking services, and 3.9 percent booked tickets through the Internet.Wang Enhai, an official with CNNIC, and an author of the report, said the phenomenon is due to China's Internet infancy and the fact most users were young people."China's Internet market is just emerging and there are still a lot of things to be done before a mature online business environment can be established," Wang said.According to CNNIC, the number of China's Internet users under 24 years old was 58 million, about 35.8 percent of the country's total Internet population. This segment of the population, comprising mostly students, spends a lot of time playing online games, listening to music and watching s.

A groom puts a wedding ring on his bride's finger during their mass wedding ceremony at South Korea's largest amusement park Everland in Yongin, about 50 km (31 miles) south of Seoul, September 20, 2006. The length of a girl's ring finger could be an indicator of her future sporting potential, researchers at King's College London said on Thursday. In the largest study of its kind, hand measurements of 607 female twins aged 25-79 from the UK were compared with the women's lifetime sporting achievements. The findings, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, found that women withring fingerslonger than their index fingers had performed better at running and associated running sports such as soccer and tennis. In women the ring finger is commonly shorter or the same length as the index finger, while in men the ring finger is generally longer. The report said detection of sporting potential by examining the ratio between the index and ring fingers "could help identify talented individuals at a pre-competitive stage."The reasons for the findings were unclear, said one of the report's authors, Professor Tim Spector from at King's College, who said he was originally sceptical about the link to sporting ability."Previous studies have suggested the change in finger length was due to changes intestosteronelevels in the womb", he said. But he said it had been found in a separate study of twins that finger length was largely inherited, possibly explaining why sporting parents often have sporting children."We found that finger length was 70 percent heritable with little influence of the womb environment," he said."This suggests that genes are the main factor and that finger length is a marker of your genes."He said no specific candidate genes had been identified for the link and that multiple genes were probably responsible.Previous studies looking at the link between finger length and sporting ability have mainly focused on men.A study published in 2001 of 304 English professional soccer players found they had a significantly larger ring-to-index-finger ratio than a control group of 533 other men.(Agencies)伦敦国王学院的研究人员周四提出,从女性无名指的长度可以看出她的竞技潜力。

The Etiquette of Chinese Banquets宴席礼仪China has long been known as the “land of ceremony and propriety”. Consequently, there are certain manners that should be observed at banquets or formal dinners. First, seat order. Chinese people attach great importance to the seating order at banquets or formal dinners. In the ancient times, at a banquet, people sat in a circle on the ground. Their seating arrangements are unknown, but it is certain that they were arranged in a certain order. It was recorded that the most honorable guest sat facing the east, the next important guest sat facing the south, next facing the north and the last facing the west. Even today at formal banquets people are arranged in a certain order, but in different areas, there are different rules concerning seat order. In the past, Chinese people often sat around a so-called eight-immortal table (a table with a rectangular top, normally with eight seats around it) to dine. In the north, the seat order was arranged this way:北方八仙桌的座次一般是:the two seats facing the door were the most important, the host sat on the right and the most honorable guest on the left;面门的两个座位为正座,其中右位为主客,左位是主人;opposite these two seats sat two specially invited guests who were supposed to help entertain the main guests;正座的对面(即背门的两个座位)为陪座,通常是晚辈或主人家找来的陪客;the other people, guests or specially invited guests, were arranged, according to their age, to sit on the other two sides of the table. The two seats closer to the host and most honorable guest were considered more important than theother two seats. In the south, the seat order was a bit different. Apart from seat order, there are also rules regarding the order of serving dishes and the way dishes are set on the table. Dishes, in the broad sense, refer to wine (or liquor), meat and vegetable dishes and grain food; in the narrow sense, it only refers to meat and vegetable dishes. The rules have undergone some changes. In the ancient times, grain food was served before wine, while today wine and meat and vegetable dishes are served before grain food. For meat and vegetable dishes, there are cold dishes and hot dishes. Normally cold dishes are served before hot ones, dry dishes are served before soup. Hot dishes are the main courses; usually there are even numbers of hot dishes, 4, 6 or 8. Sometimes there could be 16 or 32 dishes. The most sumptuous feast—Man Han Feast, has as many as 108 dishes.Soup is usually the last dish. For the way dishes are set on the table, there are also rules. For example, newly served dishes are always put near the most honorable guest; when whole fish, whole chicken or whole duck is served, the dish is normally put in such a way that the head is towards the most honorable guest. This is a way to show respect to the most honorable guest. In order to show their respect and hospitality, Chinese hosts often help the guests to the dishes. For hygiene’s sake, when doing this, they usually use an extra pair of chopsticks or spoon put on the table.

Women get what they want in London auctionA Bonham's auction house employee displays a gold necklace at the "What Women Want" auction collection in central London 11 January 2007.The world's first auction targeted exclusively at women made more than 250,000 pounds (380,000 euros, 493,000 dollars) at Bonham's auction house in London, a spokeswoman said."What Women Want" was made up of over 300 lots including clothes, jewellery, works of art and furniture, although the most expensive individual sale was of a 1970 blue Mercedesconvertible car, which sold for 27,600 pounds."More than half of the lots have been sold. We are really pleased with the results and 80 percent of the people in the room were women," a Bonhams spokeswoman told reporters. But there were no takers for some of the lots at the auction, such as a Smart car formerly owned by British pop star Robbie Williams, which had a 10,000 pound price tag."Definitely we are looking forward to repeating it in London next year after tailoring the catalogue with what works well," added the spokeswoman. She added that Bonhams' offices in Los Angeles and New York would be holding similar sales in future.(AFP)伦敦邦汉姆拍卖行日前举办了世界上首个女性专场拍卖会,据拍卖行的女发言人介绍,此次拍卖的总收入超过25万英镑。 /200803/30370
