Now that the dream has come true for tens of millions of Chinese, they are waking up each day to a life of traffic jams and smog. Beijing’s air pollution has been so bad recently that it has captured headlines around the world – yet the capital has far from the dirtiest air in China. More and more mainland cities can boast world-class traffic congestion, parking shortages and commuting times, auto analysts say. Under Chairman Mao Zedong, schoolchildren were taught that these were the ills associated with capitalism, but China’s urban planners were no match for half a century of pent-up demand from first-time car buyers. The country, whose showpiece industry event – the Shanghai Auto Show – starts this weekend, is now the world’s largest car market. And it is paying the price. With more than half of all Chinese living in cities, “smog and clog” are becoming big political issues. Even washing all those cars is exacerbating the country’s water shortage, according to a report last week from a Chinese NGO. The impact is so high that some cities are even thinking the unthinkable: sending China back to its roots as a nation of cyclists. “Ten years ago, everyone dreamt of owning a car. But after they realised that dream, they found it has caused a lot of problems,” says Dong Hongzhao of the Intelligent Traffic System programme at Zhejiang University of Technology. “Traffic congestion has harmed our health and caused a lot of inconvenience,” he adds, predicting that urbanites will soon be fed up enough to opt for public transport, or even bicycles. Schemes by local authorities to encourage people to use bikes are popping up across the country. Hangzhou, the city where Mr Dong lives and works, is one of China’s most famous tourist cities but is also a municipality of 11m people, bigger than Greater London. It is famous throughout China for its traffic jams – but also for having the world’s largest public bicycle rental scheme. An hour after sunrise, the public bicycle stand on Kaixuan Road in Hangzhou starts to get busy. A mother loads her small son on to the bike’s child seat to deliver him to school. She swipes the public transport card that gives her an hour on the bike for free – the same rechargeable card she can later use for a ride on Hangzhou’s new subway line, a public bus or taxi. Later, a middle school pupil wearing the red neckerchief of the Communist party’s Young Pioneers pulls out a bike, then an old man with a dog in the front basket, and finally 24-year-old white-collar worker Jin Qiyan takes the last cycle for his one-hour commute to work. Mr Jin owns a car, but says “it’s faster, more convenient and more environmentally friendly by bike”. With a rental stand every 300m in downtown areas, mobile apps that tell users where to find the closest available bicycle, and fees that rise from Rmb1 to Rmb3 an hour, the scheme is aly very popular: as many as 400,000 people use it every day. Hangzhou wants to encourage the city’s 1m car owners (a figure that has quintupled in the past decade) to stop “misusing” their vehicles for short trips that could be made by bike, says Luo Bin of the Hangzhou Municipal Comprehensive Traffic Research Centre, a quasi governmental organisation. The city government wants 50 to 60 per cent of people walking, riding electric bikes or push bikes. 60%。Other cities such as Suzhou, Foshan, Shenzhen, Taiyuan, Changsha, Shanghai and Chengdu, to name just a few, are also pushing public bicycle rental. But so far there are few signs that the Chinese are y to trade in their BMWs and go back to bicycles: in the first quarter of this year, sales of SUVs rose 45 per cent year on year – hardly a sign of an environmental revolution among Chinese drivers. Mr Luo acknowledges that a big part of the current problem is failure to enforce laws against traffic violations such as double parking and blocking intersections. “Fifty per cent of the congestion is made by people themselves,” says Klaus Paur, of Ipsos consultancy in Shanghai. Handing out a few traffic tickets may be easier than getting China’s car lovers to obey the decree: let them ride bikes. /201304/236584China#39;s health authorities said Tuesday that medications made from human remains were not found in the country, but they will further investigate the matter, Xinhua reported. Deng Haihua, spokesman with the Ministry of Health, made the remarks in response to media reports that so-called ;health capsules; made with aborted fetuses were smuggled into the Republic of Korea from China. China has strict rules on the disposal of the remains of dead infants, aborted fetuses and placentas, which are categorized as human remains and banned from being disposed of as medical waste. Medical institutions and their staff are forbidden to trade human remains, including placentas.

A photograph taken more than 40 years ago showing a young Barack Obama as a schoolboy in Indonesia has been found, days before he begins his presidential visit to the country。 The picture was given to Associated Press by Hadi Surya Dharma, a childhood friend of Mr Obama's, who sits beside the future president in the black and white photo。 Mr Obama, who was born to a Kenyan father and an American mother, moved to Indonesia when he was seven – after his mother married an Indonesian man she met while studying at the University of Hawaii。 Mr Obama and his mother first set up home in the Menteng Dalam area of Jakarta。 Now a jumble of houses and narrow streets in the shadow of tower blocks, at the time it was on the edge of the city and fruit trees were landmarks。 Many families still live there, and they shared memories of the boy they knew as Barry。 "He went to everyone's house, played kites with local kids, got stuck in swamps," said Coenraad Satja Koesoemah, who allowed Mr Obama's mother to use his front room to give free English lessons to locals。 "He was a Menteng Dalam kid, what more can I say?" For the first five months, Mr Obama reportedly struggled with the Indonesian language but soon became proficient。 By all accounts, he quickly became a favourite of the teachers and the pupils there, but endured some teasing on account of his looks。 Those early experiences have been cited as key moments that shaped his view on life。 "One of the reasons that he is so cool and non-combative is that he learned to deal with this teasing culture," said Kay Ikranagara, who worked with Obama's mother in Jakarta and knew the family well。 "It is a game here, and the trick is not to show you are bothered." Mr Obama lived in Indonesia for four years before returning to Hawaii to live with his grandparents。 Christie’s seemed to have lost pace against Sotheby’s in the race to get into the Chinese market. But it has powered back and now obtained a licence to operate auctions in the mainland; the first sale will be held this autumn in Shanghai. Unlike Sotheby’s, which is in partnership with the government entity GeHua, it has an independent “comprehensive auction licence”. But what the firm will not be selling is “cultural relics” – there are tight controls on antiques and antiquities such as jade, ceramics and ink paintings – which are the most high-priced works in the market. However, international works of art, wine and jewellery will be offered and, says Asian president Fran#231;ois Curiel, “We will also be able to make private sales ... We are hoping to access Chinese collectors who do not necessarily travel abroad so much.” Asked whether this means the end of Hong Kong as a sales centre, he says: “Not at all, I don’t think it will cannibalise it at all, the market is big enough for everyone.” Still in Asia, Sotheby’s spring sales season in Hong Kong concluded with a solid grand total of US0m, against expectations of US0m-US5m (pre-sale estimates don’t include commission; results do). These figures are far from the record of US7m set for the same series in 2011, but since then the Chinese market has cooled quite dramatically, due to a slowdown in the Chinese economy. At Sotheby’s, the traditional fields did well, with a tiny 17th-century ruby-red tea bowl, sold by the collector Alice Cheng, making a tidy US.6m. However there were some hiccups in the sale of contemporary Asian art, which made US.7m. According to the local art dealer Jean-Marc Decrop, “In some cases estimates were too high, and because the market has been weaker, vendors were holding off consigning. But the good things did very well: as an example, a Fang Lijun painting, “Series 1, No 4” (1990-91) made US.3m, despite being black-and-white, so not necessarily as immediately appealing as his more colourful works.” Still on the subject of Chinese art, a new website is being launched on Monday: Artshare.com. It will focus exclusively on modern and contemporary Asian art, and each month will present a curated exhibition of 10 works: the first will feature paintings by, among others, Yu Youhan (US0,000) and Li Shan (US0,000). An influential advisory committee includes Johnson Chang of Hanart TZ gallery, Pearl Lam and collectors Dominique and Sylvain Levy. China specialist Philip Dodd, who is also on the committee, says that the site “should plug into a global constituency of collectors who can’t get to Beijing.” Prices start at US,000 and there is a “private sales avenue” for transactions above US0,000. Speaking of private sales, Christie’s has a new wheeze – a nomadic “sculpture garden” to display works outside real estate developments in New York. The first is close to the firm’s Rockefeller Center headquarters at Madison and 54th Street, where the firm has placed Claes Oldenburg’s huge “Typewriter Eraser” (1976), which is being sold by private treaty. I thought the point of these transactions was confidentiality, but not so here – the piece is being touted very publicly. Christie’s explains that some transactions “we don’t communicate” and others are “open to the public”. The price is also confidential – Alexis Klein of Christie’s assures me this is legal – but hints that it is above .2m, which is what the piece fetched when it last sold in 2009. This week sees Christie’s latest sale of Modern and Contemporary Arab, Iranian and Turkish art in Dubai, held on Tuesday and Wednesday. The market for Iranian artists has been hit by trade sanctions against the country and the plunging rial, which has fallen by some 60 per cent in the past year. Its Part I sale is the smallest ever, with just 29 lots expecting up to .5m, while the high estimate for Part II falls just short of m. “Inevitably, the supply diminishes with time, as some of the artists have passed away,” says a Christie’s spokesperson, noting that the firm is “very happy” with the level of the sale. Top lot is a glittery fairytale painting by the Iranian Farhad Moshiri, “Secret Garden” (2009), estimated at 0,000-0,000. (Modern and Contemporary Arab, Iranian and Turkish Art Sale )。 In Paris, Sarti gallery has just unveiled a show of 22 paintings in the Caravaggesque tradition, which it has been patiently accumulating over the past 10 years. “While we are principally known for gold ground paintings,” says Giovanni Sarti, “we wanted to show that our interests extend beyond that, into the 17th century and beyond.” While Caravaggio himself did not have students nor did he found a school, his influence was immense, and the exhibition includes works by his closest followers – Bartolomeo Manfredi, Giovanni Battista Caracciolo, Bartolomeo Cavarozzi – to more distant admirers such as Giuseppe Ribera, Luca Giordano, Artemisia Gentileschi, Bernardo Strozzi, Daniele Crespi and Guido Reni. Prices range from 250,000 to 2.2m; the show runs until July 12. London galleries are expanding and moving: Victoria Miro is returning to the West End, taking on an extra space in St George’s Street, right behind Sotheby’s. The gallery said that it was “waiting to tie up things” before making an announcement. Stuart Shave has left his Eastcastle Street premises for 6 Fitzroy Square, and is opening a second space in Clerkenwell at the end of the year. And Sadie Coles is leaving her New Burlington Place gallery for a bigger space in Kingly Street, just on the other side of Regent Street. “We have been looking for over a year. We’re delighted with the quite grand building we found, which gives us much more space,” says Coles. The gallery will hold a couple of “guerrilla” soft openings in August, before launching in September with a show by the US artist Ryan Sullivan.
